gene clark - polly

i think you could make a case for gene clark being one of the more undervalued performers of his era.

not to turn it into a binary choice, but when you look at all the glory that's been heaped on gram parsons, and then compare their careers, it's hard for me not to think that it's very unfair that some of that sun didn't shine on clark.

i think he wrote better songs overall, was a better singer. & i'd say no other is a bit of a masterpiece, spacey and weird and better as a whole than anything parsons did.

i have nothing against gram parsons. i just think there's a bit of cosmic inequity that's happened to gene.

agree. i preferred him, gram & chris above mcguinn and his nauseating dylan covers. crosby, of course, was also a genius. i was just a little late to have caught dylan in his early years - remember hearing -bob's- version of tambourine man when i was about 12 and thinking - THIS is how that song was meant to be played.

played bass in a small tribute ensemble in gene's home town (tipton, mo), about 7 years ago, maybe for his 70th birthday. it was in the little town school auditorium. we also went to his grave site for a ceremony. a very nice experience.

Though of course I've heard of The Byrds, I'm surprised to say that until now I knew nothing about Gene Clark.

he was afraid of flying, and had some mental issues, gene seemed to be sort of edged out of the band. but he was an important early songwriting contributor.

There are a lot but I came across this one and it made the movie look so amazing I went out and bought the blu ray. It's not a bad movie, I would give it around 7/10, but it works much better as a music video and Diane Lane never looked better.

is lane actually singing this song?

No, Diane is not singing Tonight Is What It Means To Be Young. Holly Sherwood is.

There were actually two singers who sang the songs that Ellen Aim (Diane's character) sings in the film. The other was Laurie Sargent, who was in the band, Face To Face (they play The Attackers, Ellen Aim's band in the film).
Laurie sang most of the songs in the film, including the opening song,
Nowhere Fast - https://youtu.be/arxD3Ro9mAk
and
Sorcerer - https://youtu.be/1wRydMiH-DM (a song written by Stevie Nicks)

The film gets its name from Bruce Springsteen's song, Streets of Fire, and that song was supposed to close the film. However when he learned that the song was to be rerecorded by other vocalists, Bruce withdrew his permission. Jim Steinman, who wrote all those songs for Meat Loaf, was then brought in to write Nowhere Fast and Tonight Is What It Means To Be Young.
Years later, Springsteen would say that he regretted his decision to withdraw the song.

Oh yeah, I first became aware of this film when I saw Johnny Carson interview Diane Lane on The Tonight Show. As part of the segment, they showed that clip of Sorcerer that I linked to above.
For some inexplicable reason, they did not include Laurie Sargent's version of Sorcerer on the soundtrack album, but instead replaced it with a version sung by Marilyn Martin. Too bad, because I liked the film version by Laurie Sargent much more.

I really love this film, but unfortunately, it totally bombed at the box office. It did however develop a cult following which has grown over the years.
Last year, I replaced my DVD of the film with the Special Collection 35th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray from The Shout Factory.
