Is the horror genre dead?

just about I would say.

reply

not at all. not in my opinion, certainly, for whatever that's worth (not much).

i think we're in a horror golden age.

the notion of elevated horror may invoke lots of eye-rolling, but...

saint maud
blackcoat's daughter
the witch
hereditary
midsommar

all relatively recent films that are 4.5-5 star films in my books, all truly great.

and there are tons and tons of great, fun, brutal no-budget slashers and quirky horror films constantly getting ground out of the horror underground meat grinder. you have to wade through endless amounts of nonsense, but there are tons and tons and tons of fun, quirky, brutal gems out there.

i think horror, perhaps more than any other genre, has exploded in the best way from the accessibility of cheap equipment and the streaming era.

Saw this recently, which I think is a good example of what you're talking about. I was pleasantly surprised, think it was actually well made and is underrated.

unknown to me - but it looks like it's on tubi, so i'll probably check it out tomorrow or later next week. thanks.

reply

Yes, I think I saw it on tubi. It's also constantly in my recommendations on YouTube.

reply

I HAVE THAT ON DVD...ITS PART OF THE MANEATER SERIES.

reply

Hereditary is over rated and Midsommar is a rip off of The Wicker Man

reply

I agree. I didn't like either one of those movies.

reply

No, I don't think horror is dead. There are still good horror films being made.

reply

the are lists of horror on netlix and amazon (and other sites) and most i have never heard of.

reply

THATS WHAT ITS LIKE FOR EVERYONE...THERE ARE STILL MANY GEMS AND ASS KICKERS AMONGST THE DELUGE OF MEDIOCRE SHIT THOUGH.

reply

it seems every young filmmaker thinks they can do horror for some reason.

reply

THE HORROR FANDOM MAKES THE GENRE AN EASY MARK FOR ANYONE LOOKING TO "MAKE A MOVIE".

reply

No, I don't think horror is dead. There are still good horror films being made.

Definitely.

reply

Funny you should mention it hownos, I saw a stunning horror movie from 2020 last night called His House. Such an impressive and original take on the genre, I’d thoroughly recommend checking it out if you haven’t seen it. It might give you some hope for horror.

reply

absolutely great. one of the best of last year imo.

reply

I'll have to check it out. Never heard of it.

reply

Apparently it was the highest rated film of 2020 on Rotten Tomatoes. Not that RT ratings mean a great deal but I agree that it’s the best I’ve seen from last year. Those Brits certainly can produce some gems!

reply

at least it's rated over 4.0

reply

Never heard of this film. Just found it on Netflix so I'll watch it later. Thanks.

reply

No worries 😌

I saw your post in the His House thread. Glad you enjoyed it too.

reply

That movie was great

reply

So great! 😊

reply

Saw this awhile back, which I thought had an interesting new perspective, combined with all of the traditional elements of horror we're used to.

reply

the koreans have been making some good horror movies of late.

reply

This one is aptly titled with the word "extremes". After 'Dumplings', I had enough.

reply

I Saw The Devil is more of a thriller/police procedural than a horror (although it does involve some horrific violence).

reply

seems there's a glut these days

It transformed. In early cinema, horror was the special effects genre.

Japan, Thailand and S Korea seem to produce some great horror films.

they keep going back to this. that's part of the problem with horror.

reply

I know. I just thought it was an interesting coincidence that I should come upon an interview with a writer on a news program this morning, pertaining to this story, on the heels of having posted in this thread last evening. He made the same point, and went as far as to say that DeFeo didn't do it alone, he had accomplices. He also scoffed at and denied the popular "haunted house" notion that it's based upon, which made the story, "a Hollywood cottage industry", as he put it.

reply

That's the problem with all movies right now. They don't do anything new because they might not make any money.
