Is the horror genre dead?
just about I would say.
sharenot at all. not in my opinion, certainly, for whatever that's worth (not much).
i think we're in a horror golden age.
the notion of elevated horror may invoke lots of eye-rolling, but...
saint maud
blackcoat's daughter
the witch

all relatively recent films that are 4.5-5 star films in my books, all truly great.
and there are tons and tons of great, fun, brutal no-budget slashers and quirky horror films constantly getting ground out of the horror underground meat grinder. you have to wade through endless amounts of nonsense, but there are tons and tons and tons of fun, quirky, brutal gems out there.
i think horror, perhaps more than any other genre, has exploded in the best way from the accessibility of cheap equipment and the streaming era.
Saw this recently, which I think is a good example of what you're talking about. I was pleasantly surprised, think it was actually well made and is underrated.

Funny you should mention it hownos, I saw a stunning horror movie from 2020 last night called His House. Such an impressive and original take on the genre, I’d thoroughly recommend checking it out if you haven’t seen it. It might give you some hope for horror.
shareabsolutely great. one of the best of last year imo.
shareat least it's rated over 4.0
shareSaw this awhile back, which I thought had an interesting new perspective, combined with all of the traditional elements of horror we're used to.

the koreans have been making some good horror movies of late.
shareThis one is aptly titled with the word "extremes". After 'Dumplings', I had enough.

I Saw The Devil is more of a thriller/police procedural than a horror (although it does involve some horrific violence).
shareseems there's a glut these days
shareall rated below 4.0

It transformed. In early cinema, horror was the special effects genre.
shareJapan, Thailand and S Korea seem to produce some great horror films.

sharethey keep going back to this. that's part of the problem with horror.
shareI know. I just thought it was an interesting coincidence that I should come upon an interview with a writer on a news program this morning, pertaining to this story, on the heels of having posted in this thread last evening. He made the same point, and went as far as to say that DeFeo didn't do it alone, he had accomplices. He also scoffed at and denied the popular "haunted house" notion that it's based upon, which made the story, "a Hollywood cottage industry", as he put it.
shareThat's the problem with all movies right now. They don't do anything new because they might not make any money.
