Popular Bands Who Are No One's #1 Favorite

I've never heard anyone in my life, anywhere in the world say their favorite band was Boston... Same with Wings.

reply

I never heard that about Wings, but I knew plenty who said that about Boston, including my best friend.

reply

Wow, plenty?

reply

Yep, there are Tom Scholz geeks out there to this day -- esp among guitar players. Also, they hit it big during my formative years. You weren't cool unless you drew a good Boston guitar spaceship on your notebook cover.

reply

I have over 5,000 songs, and I'd say 4,900 are from the 60s and 70s (mostly the 70s) but I only know about two songs by Boston and never liked them.. If I can't stand the vocals, I won't be a fan.

It's more about how many people you know who are heavily into music. I have a friend who loves Devo more than any other band, has all their albums and too many bootlegs to count. I have another friend who felt the same for Bananarama, and yes, had a case of bootlegs on cassette. I think those two would have made your list too but... different strokes.

reply

Funny you mention them because I just had a very similar conversation. I was telling my daughter how cool it is that her friend is such a Devo fan and how she even dresses up like them sometimes. I mean I’m betting she doesn’t have any other friends who are into them like she is.

reply

To most, they're Whip It. To others, new wave, post-punk icons.

Great example! Everyone has the 74-78 Greatest Hits, but I've never heard anyone even list them in their Top 5/10

>Everyone has the 74-78 Greatest Hits<

[Raises hand] 😀

I think that dynamic holds true for me in lots of cases, not just music. Many people seem to flock to what's "safe" and familiar, and while I might not find the tastes of Mr & Mrs Vanilla to be repulsive to me, they're nothing I'd go out of my way to listen to, watch, go to, eat or drink.

Yes, this is definitely one.. I think they were the best cover band. I wonder if that was why they weren't so beloved today. I would guess there were some who called them their favorite band in 1969 after doing two or three albums. Three lead singers who can harmonize, and took songs that weren't hits and made them so.

REM
Well liked, great band and yet...

reply

Great example there.

Toto

Have sold over 40 million records, won 6 Grammys, have toured extensively for over 40 years, but I can't recall anyone saying they were their #1 favorite
