".... but you had a tv and VCR (and a theoretically limitless amount of videotapes), could you survive entertainment-wise?"

It just so happens that, well, pardon the cliche', "I've been there, done that".

Outside of human interaction with others, it was:

VHS videos, both rented and owned. Availability of them was quite good then, including lots of cool eclectic stuff that you'd be hard pressed to find now on Netflix or whatever, since they seem to be dumping the more obscure stuff regularly. Yeah you had to go to a brick and mortar store, and return to same when done, but it was fun browsing the aisles.

Cable TV; HBO and the like

Taking chances with your luck on network TV

Books

Tunes from the stereo

I survived it the first time round. I don't see why I couldn't again.

reply

Could I survive? Lol

I actually like tv from that era, it's modern tv that I find hard to watch.

Roseanne was good in 1990.
The Simpsons was starting.
There were other good shows.

If I had a good video store I'd be happy with the 80s movies on offer.

NES was a little limited but hey, mario bros. 3 was out and that was good.

I would miss my cell phone and gps, but I could live w/o the internet.

If I could go back to the days of wandering the action, drama and horror sections of video stores I’d be in heaven. Even in those times, I always looked for older films to rent and almost never visited the new releases isle.

Can I be the same age I was in 1990?

reply

I'd be a bit pissed to say the least
As much as our modern tech has caused some very serious problems for social media users and ruined people's careers because of 10 year old comments I'd be sorry to not have streaming access to foreign or obscure titles

I suppose lack of streaming would leave me with more time to go hiking or gardening

You could get almost any movie you wanted on VHS. As for television shows...getting every episode was a little more difficult than it is now.
