Anyone here into jigsaw puzzles?

I’ve always enjoyed them but during the shutdowns of last year I really started to get into them again. I find it a great way to kill time and I personally get a thrill when it all starts coming together.

Speaking of coming together, I’m currently doing a 1000 piece puzzle of the cover of The Beatles’ Abbey Road album. It’s a good scene for a puzzle with lots of different colour sections which makes it a bit easier than one with large sections of block colours. The previous one I did was Mando and Grogu from the Mandalorian and it was so hard because a good 80% was just black.

Any other jigsaw enthusiasts here?

When I was a kid. Although I've never done one with something like 2000 pieces.

Love them, but leaving a large one out unfinished with cats and dogs is problematic.

I’m lucky, my cat is completely uninterested in my puzzles and doesn’t go near them at all.

I made a 1 inch tall box that just fits under my couch with a sliding lid. I take it out and put it on the coffee table. It definitely isn't as convenient, but keeps all the pieces together.

Your box sounds very nice! What did you make it out of??? I use to use the cardboard puzzle boxes of other puzzles to keep pieces of puzzle in. I'd place the ones with the same colors on them into several other boxes and then work those pieces into larger pieces and add them onto the pieces inside of the frame.

Then I'd also stack the boxes with the pieces in them into stacks on top of each other (which also protected them a little bit from being attacked by pets). And I'd also cover them up and the FRAME PART with other cardboard coverings.

But your box would also be a much easier way to deal with that kind of a pet problem.

The BEATLES and Poe Book Cover puzzles sound really nice!!!

I use to put them together while listening to the news --but stopped when I ran out of places to put them on the walls -- where I'd also place them after the backs of them were glued together after putting them together.

The cats didn't attack them while putting them together, but they attack them once they're on the walls (because of the COLORFUL PUSH PINS that hold them there). So now there are various puzzles that have pieces missing from them. Also use to try and find the pieces and put them back again, but eventually just gave up.

Most of the puzzles are of cats and TIGERS (White Tiger in the SNOW is my favorite) and other animals, but also have other scenes (light houses, seascapes, bridges, gardens, pretty houses, etc. as well).

I'm with you there. When we had our cat (she passed last year), she once jumped on the table and pushed an entire puzzle off. We found the dog chewing on the pieces.

reply

Sorry to hear that you're cat passed away last year. How old was she??? I also have 3 KEYS that have been pulled off of the LAP TOP that are now held on by SCOTCH TAPE.

reply

She was 19. Lived a good long life.

reply

Happy to hear that she made it that far a long in life!!!

The vet says the first 2 yrs of a cat's life is equal to about 20 yrs of a human life, and then they age about 7 human years each year after that -- which means your cat was probably about 134 yrs old in CAT YEARS.

Never had one make it that far before. Do you have another cat now??? If not, are you planning to get another one again???

reply

We can't get another. My wife and I both developed allergies to cats sometime during the time we had her. Doctor said it would be in best interest to get rid of her. We refused to do that and lived with the allergies. Fortunately allergy shots made it tolerable.

Thats the other problem, I have 3 dogs. They'd never take a piece, but definitely chew it up the second it hit the floor.

The combination of having PETS and attempting to do PICTURE PUZZLES can definitely be a problem.

😄

Yes, just finished a grouping of Edgar Allen Poe book covers. Next up - soda cans montage. I actually do all kinds of puzzles. Crosswords among them. Good for the brain. If I was an Avenger, I would be The Puzzler.

reply

A kindred spirit! 🤗

I also love crosswords and completely agree that they are excellent for keeping the mind sharp.

Trivia - The Puzzler was a one-of villain on the Batman TV show, played by Maurice Evans.

Ow cool!

What the coincidence! I just (like 10 seconds ago) contemplated buying a coffee table for jigsaw puzzlers. I love puzzles of all kinds but jigsaw require a dedicated space. The Abbey Road cover puzzle sounds like a good one. I like puzzles with lots of colors, but once as an extra challenge I did a 500 piece upside-down, shapes only.

On a related note, have you seen the film Puzzle (2018)? Interesting story about an unlikely pair of jigsaw puzzle enthusiasts.

reply

Yeah, regarding the dedicated space I have a dining table I hardly ever use so I’ve set that up as my puzzle area. I cut out a large section from the cardboard box my 52” tv came in and use that so I can move the unfinished puzzle if I have to.

I haven’t seen that movie but it sounds like something I’d be interested in. I’ll try to check it out, thanks 🙏

THAT MOVIE LOOKS GOOD..I WANT TO SEE THAT NOW.

It’s an interesting film and one of the last films Irrfan Khan made, RIP.

I recently did a couple of jigsaw puzzles of pirates, they was easy to complete, they only had pieces of eight!

reply

I'm glad you asked that. I've been doing jigsaw puzzles all of my life. My sister and I are doing a thousand-piece now. The biggest one I've done was six-thousand pieces. Were always doing puzzles.
