shareWasn't Peter O'Toole Burton's famous drinking buddy?
shareApparently, in various combinations Burton, O'Toole, Richard Harris, Oliver Reed, and the footballer George Best were drinking buddies. Don't know if they ever ALL got together. It'd be a brave landlord who told that lot "Time gentlemen, please! C'mon you lot, haven't you got homes to go to?" 😄

That was the first person I thought of when I saw the thread title.
Montgomery Clift. Supposedly, in his quivering, trembling performance in Judgment At Nuremberg, he's not acting; he was really that far in decline by age 41.
Another one -- Joanna Moore, a knock-your-eyes-out beauty who was ruined by the bottle. Multiple DUI arrests, and a crash that resulted in her losing several fingers.
Also, Johnny Carson. He did try a couple of movie roles, so we can count him as an actor. While he had a commanding presence on the small screen, it strangely didn't work for him on the big screen. He had one DUI arrest but otherwise was a functional alcoholic. He was notorious for getting heavily smashed, and reliably turned into an ugly personality when he did.
Errol Flynn. My Favorite Year was based on his drinking exploits.

Which reminds me, add Mary Tyler Moore to the list.
On a side note, when they were working together on The Dick Van Dyke Show, Moore and others nicknamed him Penis Von Lesbian.

I suddenly got an idea for a Star Trek episode. Kirk and Spock distract Scotty with a phony engineering crisis, sneak into his cabin and steal his green booze, then hide in one of the shuttlecraft and get plastered.
That clip was great. I didn't know this about him.
