Do you like mathematics?

I should like mathematics - I'm a community college math tutor and it is necessary overall - but it's something I would enjoy in moderation.

I found it fun but when the semester was over I was glad I had freedom from it. did some math for a business degree, statistics and a generic calculus courses.

But I didn't get the degree and ended up with tons of debt and an associates of arts.

what type of degree do you need to become a tutor?

reply

Typically none, just demonstrated knowledge in a field. As a university student I tutored part time at the nearby high school. If we're talking about private tutoring, agencies strongly prefer someone with a degree specific to the subject.

I was a student tutor at the numerical mathematics institute of a technical university, while I had no degree but needed the extra money. Got the job by one of my answers at an exam. It happened to be a new but more efficient algorithm to a common problem. At first, my intention was to provide them with a highly counter-intuitive, but mathematically bulletproof solution - shorter than their's. The question was as boring as the obvious answer they were expecting to get.
I've realized the beauty and simplicity while I came up with it, but had no idea of its actual impact.

I was very good at math until someone starting shoving letters and slashes in there...WTF was that all about?!?

Stop making up fantastic nonsense!
Nobody knows what that means

reply

Fu(k) no.

I really get into a lot of science and mathematics makes a lot of the pseudoscience nonsense fall by the wayside quickly. I have to admit that I wish I would have learned more mathematics at a younger age.

reply

I would never be able to teach it.

math and calculus were the only subjects i really enjoyed in my high school days, and the only ones i was really any good at. not that i was was at the top of my class, but...i was in the mix. i always found working on math problems very satisfying. certainly more so than trying to read shakespeare, ffs.

i actually had a vague dream that i might like to get a degree in applied mathematics or some such thing, but a few years of hard drinking managed to send that notion packing.

I took several math classes as electives well after fulfilling the basic requirements because the department was host to many attractive female students.
