Have you ever known someone who just "tells it like it is?"
It's a shame those of us who do this are unfairly disregarded as assholes. We're actually just the brunt and honest ones of the world who don't wear masks.

shareNew Yorkers seem to be notorious for this attitude.
shareNo I never have. I've met a few people who tell it like they think it is but the majority of people either tell an awful lot of lies or just pretty much keep their mouths shut.
There is a line in Rush Hour where Jackie Chan's character just lets Chris Tucker's character crap on for a while. He then says he likes to let people do that as he finds out quicker how full of shit they are.
That is how I see the majority of chatter boxes.

Do you know what brunt means?
Are you sure it wasnt some other word ending in unt you were thinking of?

The problem with that view is that it's possible to express ones opinions firmly, unequivocally, and unapologetically while disagreeing with others without being rude. It's quite easy, in fact. Just say "I don't agree" and give your reasons.
In my experience, people who describe their own behavior as "telling it like it is" are often assholes, enjoy being assholes, and use this feigned excuse of direct frankness to be assholes. On the other hand, people who truly are sincere and speak with candor don't try to justify it. They don't have to. They just do it.
well, there's nothing wrong with telling the truth. we all should do that.
but if you go around saying things with a sneering condescension, which is the first thing i think of when i hear someone say 'i tell it like it is' then i don't think you should be surprised if people don't take to that.
two of the people i admire most - tom sowell & milton friedman - spent their entire careers saying things that many people, including many in their own profession, thought were wrong. but they always did so cheerfully, never sneeringly, and always did their best to engage with arguments & ideas, & never attack individuals.
if you don't take human emotion into account when trying to communicate, then you're not actually communicating. at least not effectively. in fact, you may simply be a jerk. and most of the 'i tell it like it is' people i've met in my life absolutely reek of jerkiness.
