Will Indian food ever be popular in America?

It's the number one type of food in the UK, and that's because white people love it just as much as Indians.

But I don't recall many Indian restaurants from my travels in America.

What's stopping this cuisine from taking off?

reply

There are ethnic restaurants where ethnic people live. Lots of Indian people=lots of Indian restaurants.

NYC has tons of them.

reply

I live in a very white small city/university town and I know of at least one Indian restaurant and I'm sure there must at least a couple more. I wish I could afford to dabble in all the interesting eateries in this town.

reply

Maybe once a month you should splurge and treat yourself!

reply

And with all good humor I'll reply, maybe you should join me !

reply

:D

it's reasonably popular in my area (mid-west canada). i can't throw a brick around here without hitting an indian restaurant. there are 4 within a 5 minute walk of my apartment.

there are historical reasons why indian cuisine became so popular in the uk. we don't share that here, obviously, but it's still very popular, as it should be.

honestly, the single thing i miss the most in the pandemic world is going to the indian buffet down the street every second friday to fill my arteries with death. their navrattan korma might be my favourite thing in the world.

reply

I live in a neighbourhood with a high density of Indians and we have so many great restaurants.

reply

I'm a bit concerned at your tendency to throw masonry at Indian restaurants. Whud they ever do to you?

reply

I had a buffalo burger once.

reply

As in Bison/buffalo and not hot sauce buffalo?

reply

bison the meat

reply

We get a lot of that around here. Yak steaks are amazing too, you just shouldn't serve them above medium rare.

reply

Although I had one, you do know that I was joking, as in American Indian vs. India Indian.

reply

Indian restaurants in Melbourne used to be absolute crap decades ago. Foul tasting, foul looking, over spiced garbage.

reply

And it all tastes the same no matter what the main ingredients are.

reply

Indeed.

"What's stopping this cuisine from taking off?"

Price and quality.

reply

I recently did an Indian takeaway and they were stingy with he meat , I complained and they gave more but I don't like having to complain so they lost a customer.

Finding a high-quality authentic Indian restaurant is quite a challenge. If you have a chance to visit Costa Mesa, try this one and I guarantee that you won't get disappointed.

reply

Will do! Only 2 hours away from me.

reply

It's very popular in Australia, as you would know. Wasn't aware it wasn't in the USA.

I love it myself. Nothing like a good, hot, spicy curry. Korma or Vindaloo is my favourite.

reply

I like Dosas too.

reply

Oh yeah. Yum. Dosa is great.

The Indian Express restaurant I used to go to when I lived in Sydney also made the best cheese and garlic naan bread you're likely to ever taste. Sadly, last time I visited they were gone and had been replaced by a 7 Eleven :(

reply

That's sad. I'm hoping that one of my favourite places survives the covid. They have the best Amritsari fish. They also serve really good Nepalese momos.

reply

I like most ethnic foods, but I really dislike Indian food. The curry is sooooo overpowering, but the strange thing is I love curry in Thai dishes.

I think it's probably most popular with younger people here in the US.

reply

Butter chicken is a nice indian dish. Tried that one?

reply

No, I haven't.

Edit - I looked up the recipe - just don't think I would like it because of the curry. But if you want to have me over for dinner I would be happy to try it! LOL.

reply

I'm the same way.

reply

Indian food is big here! Not as popular as burgers, but there are almost as many Indian restaurants around here as there are Chinese, about the same number as Thai places.

But this is California, of course.
