When did you stop liking Eddie Murphy?

Harlem Nights? His arrest for soliciting a tranny? Norbert? Planet Pluto?

reply

I don't really know the guy. He's talented, though the movies he chooses are sometimes kind of questionable. I heard he's good in that Dolemite movie.

reply

Dolemite Is My Name was a very entertaining movie, Murphey was great

The story is a nice balancing act and has fun with a really wild and offbeat biography but never belittles Moore or treats him like a buffoon

reply

The Golden Child (1986). He was ok for a couple more years but The Golden Child signaled the beginning of the end.

reply

I HAVENT...A FEW BUMPS ALONG THE ROAD...STILL A FUNNY FUNNY GUY...GOOD SKILLS TOO...DREAMGIRLS IS A GOOD EXAMPLE.

reply

After Dr.Dolittle (1998) I don't care much about his movies. But I still enjoyed Mulan and Shrek movies. He's really good in those.

reply

He was great hosting SNL last year.

reply

One of the best guests they have had in a decade. He seemed to be really enjoying it too.

reply

I didn't stop liking Murphy. I like his old movies.

Of course, there was a moment when his movies became quite shitty. But I don't think that's his fault. He shined in a type of comedy that became politically incorrect after the 90s. Last two decades, it would have been completely impossible to make a movie like 48 Hrs.

reply

I thought everyone disliked him for a good decade.

reply

I feel the same way, the man is a comedy legend

Your point about 48 Hrs is dead-on accurate...the various slurs and overall abundance of verbal obscenities would put that script in the rubbish bin today but that was the whole point...A violent, racist old school cop teams up with a sneaky, untrustworthy convict to take down a gang

Hollywood too often plays it too safe for daring humor now so they gelded Murphy and stuck him in a bunch of 'family friendly' fare

reply

I thought he was wonderful in the family friendly fare. He was fantastic in Mulan and really made the movie.

reply

Nothing against his Daddy Daycare phase but Murphy was better than a lot of that stuff

reply

As a matter of fact, Nolte and Murphy had both a similar problem. Both shined portraying characters that were lovable jerks. In both cases, their careers sank after the 90s, when that type of character became politically incorrect.

reply

Our loss
Comedy is dangerous and big studios are too timid now

reply

I still like him, but his last movie I've seen at a cinema is "Boomerang"

reply

Not that I was ever a real fan of him but when he started making crappy reboots and more kiddie type films. I preferred the fast talking Beverly Hills Cop/Raw comedian.

reply

He liked those paychecks.

reply

I haven't really followed his career so I might be wrong. But I think films like Nutty Professor etc were a come back of sorts, like trying to reinvent himself. I can imagine he was paid well.

reply

i really dont think i wanna re watch Raw , i thiought it was hilarious in 1990 though

I feel the same about the kiddie films , I dont think ive seen any after Coming to America, except Shrek

I could give BHC 1 or 2 another go tho

reply

I think Delirious was better but it has been a while.

BHC 1 is awesome the two sequels are very different, they are more straight up action films. But it has been a while since I have seen them too.
