Spin-Offs (film or TV) that you consider on par with the original source.

Frasier / Cheers

reply

Babylon 5 / Crusade

reply

The Simpsons/The Tracey Ullman Show

*Not on par with Tracey (which was a funny show,) but far better

reply

I bet they never dreamt in a million years how that turned out.

reply

Jag/NCIS

reply

Good one!

reply

Bumblebee (2018)/better than all 4 Transformers sequel films

reply

I loved Bumblebee but was bored with most of the Transformers films.

Buffy & Angel.
Cheers & Frasier (worked in my opinion because they are completely different)
Chicago Fire & Chicago PD similar standard. There was also Chicago Med and Law but I never liked them.
Diff'rent Stroker & Facts of Life (like Cheers and Frasier it worked because they different)
Golden Girls & Empty Nest
Happy Days & Mork Mindy (Laverne & Shirley to a lesser degree. I would say Mork was better than Happy Days)
Life on Mars & Ashes to Ashes
Man About the House & Robin's Nest (Man about the house was the English show that inspired Three' Company)

reply

Serenity ( a movie)
perfect wrap up for Firefly ( a oh-so-tragically short lived sci fi series)

reply

Perfect Strangers/Family Matters

reply

That's a good example

Perfect Strangers was pretty funny
(8 seasons, 150 episodes)

Family matters was funnier, in my opinion anyway
(9 seasons, 215 episodes)
*and FM gave us 'The Urkel Dance'
😃

reply

Indeed.

This is one of the few examples where a spin-off was more successful than the original.

From a Nielsen rating perspective

Maybe:

JAG/NCIS

??

Can't think of any others...

reply

I've never seen JAG or NCIS but looking them up just now I see it all amounts to about 800 total episodes...WOW!

People just love the lawyer and cop stuff

reply

JAG is far superior to NCIS, but NCIS has been more popular. JAG was a lawyer show but I never thought of it as a formulaic courtroom drama. The JAG lawyers got involved with all sorts of adventures that made each episode different than the last. NCIS is just another procedural show. I watch it and it's not bad, but it's sort of bland especially in the later seasons. I loved JAG, it's one of my all time favorite shows.

I vote Fraiser over Cheers.
Young Sheldon is as good as The Big Bang Theory, but it's a very different kind of show than TBBT.
Adam-12 was better than Dragnet.
Boston Legal over The Practice.

reply

I preferred Cheers because Norm and Cliff were just like the guys you'd meet at the pub every night and Carla was a no BS firecracker

Frasier was pretty good though, the Dad and his little Terrier were a lot of laughs

reply

Boston Legal took itself far less seriously than The Practice which from memory was pretty straight laced.

reply

Frasier is better.

reply

I agree Frasier was a better quality sitcom, which won tons and tons of Emmy's. I think this show is going to on forever in Syndication.

reply

Cheers had more of the classic sitcom feel which to me is almost a play/theatre production vibe. Frasier was more sophisticated obviously due to the main character but also the execution of the show itself.
