Why do people say "sweet sixteen"?

I think it sounds retarded. Wouldn't "sweet fourteen" be more appropriate? I prefered being 14 than 16.

16’s a big age, most people get their driver’s license, most people get their first paying job, and it’s the first year in the later half of your teens, your biggest step to adulthood so far

reply

Yeah and because of that some stupid teens think that they are now adults and can do what they want. You are still a child, not an adult.

And most people get their driver's license? Not where I live..

reply

In America they do. You get your temps at 15 and a half.

Also what’s with your like resentment towards teenagers?

reply

America's logic!

Drive and have sex at 16, go to the army at 18!

But don't dare to go in a sex shop or drink alcohol before 21!

reply

Yikes!
Here it’s...
Sex is legal @16 (you finish compulsory High School / GCSEs at 16)
Driving is legal @17
Drinking and smoking is legal @18 (you finish High School / A-Levels at 18)
But you can drink alcohol when accompanied by an adult at 16 or 17 in a restaurant for example, you just can’t buy it.

reply

Because fourteen starts with an f while sixteen an s. It's just better sounding. Sweet seventeen is fine too. Fourteen can have, say, fancy fourteen or festive fourteen.

reply

It's a significant year of age in some countries/cultures as mentioned.

reply

I think it's because it becomes normal to fuck a 16 year old. While fucking a 15 y old is held in contempt, 16 is much more tolerable.

reply

And this is REALLY retarded. You don't get a sudden huge boost in maturity from 15 to 16.

reply

No, but it’s legal in a lot of places then, so it’s technically not wrong, just maybe socially or morally wrong depending on the people involved.

reply

Historically it was the coming of age party. A transition to adulthood. It's a nod to debutante parties.

Where I grew up if a girl was Hispanic she mostly celebrated her 15th birthday.
