Apocalypto is a masterpiece

It is abhorrent that it got so little attention because of Mel Gibson’s coinciding drunken meltdown, I don’t really care who he is as a person he’s a brilliant filmmaker and that’s one of his best

reply

It is a great movie but very historically inaccurate.

reply

Of course it is so is Braveheart, still amazing films

reply

Westerns are historically inaccurate too, so what?

The inaccuracies weren't there to promote some political agenda, but to make the story more appealing.

reply

Ah no shit sherlock. I said the movie was great.

reply

It's pretty top-grade, yeah. A great thriller, and kinda woefully forgotten. Hacksaw Ridge was another one that Gibson did that seems to be talked about less and less. It got attention when it came out of course.

Yeah, Apocalypto was a really cool "take" on the thriller genre.

reply

Hacksaw Ridge is a masterpiece. It's also THE best Christian movie ever made, better than Passion.

reply

Way better than Passion, but I'd go with Silence for all-time best Christian film. Andrew Garfield really found a niche in 2016.

reply

Silence is more like Catholic thing tho'.

reply

Maybe, but most of the struggles of faith and doubt in the film are, I think, universally found amongst most religions and denominations.

reply

The lack of attention it got was only partially due to Mel's alcoholism issues of his past. Apocalypto doesn't get a lot of attention because most American's don't want to watch a movie that's 100% subtitled.

Yes I know Passion Of The Christ was subtitled but a majority Christian nation and one with the culture of America will always flock to see a Jesus movie in mass numbers. You know the evangelical right ate POTC up.

As for Apocalypto, I agree it IS a masterpiece and Mel IS a brilliant filmmaker. One of the best of all time. 4 out of 5 of Gibson directed films are epic! The other one, Man Without A Face, is awesome as well, just not a historical epic fiction movie.

Yeah I think you’re right, and the subject matter and artistic style of filmmaking aren’t appealing to the mainstream.

reply

This is a great movie. Very intense. Scary and emotional.
And I’m positive they let a Jaguar literally kill a man on film. Goddamn.

reply

Different regulations in Central America haha?

reply

Perhaps so. It was worth it.

reply

Realism is always preferred.

reply

I’ve had a very vivid nightmare about being killed by a large cat that woke me in the middle of the night. I blame this film and Mad Mel.

reply

I was actually attacked by a large cat in the middle of the night. Felt like The Ghost and the Darkness.

reply

I haven’t watched that but I think my dream was something similar. I was in a small hut village and a Lion came from tall grass that surrounded the village.

reply

Yup that’s how it went down, picked them Chinamen off one by one until Val Kilmer had enough.

reply

It's awesome.

Except that one scene in the water. You know what I'm talking about.

reply

The water birth? Lol too graphic for you? I thought the sacrifices were a bit more unsettling personally.

reply

I never actually saw it... after The Man Without a Face, Braveheart and above all The Passion of the Christ, I gave up on Gibson ever making a film that I liked. I may check Apocalypto out, one of these days, because the setting does intrigue me, but I don’t hold out much hope.

reply

It’s no Braveheart but it’s a fantastic film, and of course would never be allowed in today’s censorious climate. It has certain Mel staples - wholesome young ‘jocks’, evil caricature villains, homosexuality equated to moral decay, brutal violence.

Given how easy it is to get cancelled, it’s amazing that Mel still has a half decent career. I guess it’s because he never bends the knee, and that affords him a level of respect from his enemies. If only more people would follow his example.

reply

I agree with everything you said. I just watched Apocalypto again a few weeks ago. It truly is a masterpiece. 10/10
