What did you hippies watch this week? (07/06-13/06)

Today's my mom's birthday. Just to make sure she knows I love her much I drank all her liquor.

My week:

Hulk (2003 TV): I had many chances to watch the Incredible Hulk with Edward Norton but for some reason I wanted to see this one first. I never had the opportunity to do so until now and I can’t say anything really bad about it but I can’t say it’s great either. It’s mostly fun but I wouldn’t watch it again. My rating: 6/10

Snakes on a plane (2006 TV): I stayed away from this one because I never wanted to spend time watching a movie about snakes on a plane but to be honest, this time I was somehow excited as the tension was building up for the great “snake release”. What came after was as expected, a bunch of ridiculous death by way of snake bites and other random kills. Then came Samuel’s famous sentence which was great indeed. It has a few thrills but overall it’s not a really good movie, as expected. My rating: 5/10

Knives out (2019 DVD): I was so pumped up to watch a good whodunnit movie but to be honest me and my wife were always one step ahead of the script and found the mystery not so mysterious after all. The story was still interesting but I found that some characters lacked development/screentime. My rating: 7/10

North by northwest (1959 TV): I declare that this movie is a comedy for the very intelligent people. Well, I know I laughed. First of all, what’s up with his mother looking five years older than him? Then there is the drunk driving scene, the backstab murder, the phone calls to his mother, the coincidences in chain, the sunglasses, and Grant can pull it all off with his “nice face”... oh and you know that scene in every film where the hero walks away with a big explosion in the back? well it comes from this movie! The script kept me on the edge of my seat, the settings designs were delicious and the acting just perfectly over the top. The last 40 minutes were not on par with the quality of the rest though. My rating: 8.5/10

Stuber (2019 DVD): Overall, this was a good action comedy but I actually expected it to be more violent and I expected Batista to be the funniest one of the two but he was not. He was still good though. The story is nothing you haven’t seen before but it was entertaining enough. My rating: 7/10

I saw North by Northwest several years ago, gave it 7/10 on IMDb. Entertaining movie. I like most Hitchcock films. Not all, but most. This one was alright.

I've actually watched a few lately, but I hesitate to name them here because I'm thinking about using them in the movie-guessing game (though I'm not sure about that either because they're pretty obscure, and not just by hownos' standards).

Bernard Herrmann's score in North by Northwest (1959) was used in one or more David Copperfield TV magic specials.

That film is shown several times per year without commercials on TCM. Early this year, the scumbags at Xfinity/Comcast made TCM (Turner Classic Movies) a premium-pay channel, part of a sports package.

A sports package? Seriously? How much overlap is there between people buying a sports package and people watching the kind of stuff shown on TCM? What a monumentally bad decision. As if making it a premium channel wasn't bad enough.

People were royally pissed off for exactly that reason, especially the elderly. Xfinity's excuse was that only a small percentage of viewers watch that channel. My reply was that only a small percentage of people watch ANY cable channel. Even the broadcast networks get few viewers, compared to years ago. The parent company of TCM is apparently owned by a competitor of Xfinity's parent company.

Where I live, Xfinity has a monopoly on cable, except for satellite systems. They should have their license revoked.

Verizon and other cable operators have not followed Xfinity's lead. There are no commercials on TCM to raise revenue. Maybe they could run them at the end of each film to make money and buy down the cost to keep it free,

Black and White (2015)
This is a really good drama involving Kevin Costner, who portrays a man with a drinking problem, trying to get to know his black family member(s) better while dealing with his own problems. This film did a really good job displaying the differences in cultural expectations between black and white Americans, especially those living in interracial or mixed-race families. I don't want to go into too much detail, both with the film or my own family, but this really hit close to home for me personally.

Mortal Kombat (1995)
What can I say? This is a terrible movie but the music is excellent! In all seriousness though, the film is action-packed, loaded with punchy dialogue, keeps a really good pace, and more importantly, it teaches an important lesson about death; namely, we are responsible for our own actions. The movie really could have used a lot more editing. Some of the scenes made little sense or the characters were getting way too bent out of shape and emotional with a person whom they had just met the previous day. It's kind of odd. But hey, all of this added up is part of the charm!

Wonder Woman (2009)
Before the live-action Wonder Woman we've all come to know and love in 2017, there was this animated gem that just continues to get more relevant with each passing year. I really enjoy this film. My favorite scene is when Princess Diana and Steve Trevor are in the hospital together, awaiting the Amazon to fully heal (And no, I'm not talking about Stevie boy! 😉). He makes a rousing speech to her about how men don't try to keep women down in society on purpose, but many of the things done for women is meant to be done out of respect even though the relationship between the sexes is far from perfect. Steve is no paragon of virtue; he's a womanizer and drinks too much. The film is just as much about him as it is Wonder Woman even though he is not presented nor is treated as such. Aries is an awesome villain.

North by Northwest I give a solid 7 although it’s been quite a while since I’ve seen it.

Return of the Street Fighter (1974)
I’m pretty sure the original Street Fighter, this one and the 3rd were all made in 1974 so Sonny Chiba was a busy man. I loved the original but this one, not so much. Still worth it for genre fans though.

All the Colors of the Dark (1972)
Another mystery directed by Sergio Martino, but this time revolving around a satanic cult. Good one.

Robowar (1987)
Horrible rip off of Predator staring the always screaming Reb Brown. I love all of his military hand signals too. If this is your cup of tea you’ll laugh all the way through.

Time After Time (1979)
H.G. Wells follows Jack the Ripper forward in time to modern San Francisco to stop his killing spree. I don’t think I’ve ever seen David Warner in anything where he wasn’t great. Killer movie.

Not really. I didn’t find it that entertaining or interesting. The performances were fine, but I wasn’t really impressed with any of them. I thought the story was just alright.

Yes. I can't stop thinking about it. It was effectively scary.

It reminds me of "Man in the High Castle", but this show is more about ordinary Americans instead of heroes.
