When I first joined I was working in a college library, mostly in the computer lab dealing with printing issues and Microsoft formatting. So I was sitting at a computer all day everyday, because I was not busy at all, except during the final week of class. I don’t remember how I found this site. I think I just googled movie chat board or something .
Before it closed, I urged IMDB message board users to come to TMDB and many did so. https://www.themoviedb.org/
TMDB runs circles around MovieChat in terms of data about a movie or TV show on the title page. This site doesn't list the director and often the protagonist is not listed in the cast. But the TMDB message board activity has dwindled. Many of the folks posting here stopped posting over there.
MovieChat's main draw was that it imported the IMDB posts (that had not been previously deleted on IMDB.) You can still read contemporaneous posts from films released 10 years ago, to see the initial reactions.
Eventually I created an account here to post in individual film pages, but I never came into General Discussions until recently.
It was the IMDB boards closing.
