Movies You Watched on TV as a Kid

What are some movie scenes that you saw on TV as a kid that really scared you? It’s crazy how they were showing all of these types of movies on TV back then.

Some of mine:

Burnt Offerings (1976)
Every time the Chauffeur was shown with the eerie music, dreamlike visuals and Reed freaking out really frightened the hell out of me.

Don’t Go to Sleep (1982)
The pizza cutter scene was bad enough, but the one that really stuck in my head was when the boy tied his sisters shoelaces in the car.

Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981)
Of all the murders the man in the grain silo really shocked me. I can’t see one of those silos to this day, without thinking of this movie.

Salem’s Lot (1975)
That kid scratching on the window is the thing nightmares are made of.

My dad let me watch the Exorcist as a really young kid. I couldn’t sleep in my own bed for weeks.

reply

Wow! I bet that was rough! I probably didn’t see it until high school. It actually wasn’t until a recent viewing that I realized how the most important part of the story revolves around the younger priest.

reply

Ya I always thought my dad hated me. Lol

reply

I'm 47 and that one still scares the hell out of me and I don't even believe in that stuff!

One of the very best horrors ever

That movie scares me more than the streets. You’re from NY so you know what Chicago is like. Remember that maze people would email each other and at the end she would jump out at you? That fucking thing made me fall out my chair and bruise my knee. I had the volume up high so that just added to the creepiness.

I saw something like this on Youtube once
A guy completely wrecked his Monitor he freaked out so badly LOL

Candyman (1992)

Helen meets Candyman, blacks out and wakes up covered in blood. AARGH! The most scary part was they didn't show what happened in between. The blood was just a jump scare for me. Also, Virginia Madsen is so good in this.

I don't remember the movie but the scene was kids trapped behind white latex / somekind of rubbery cloths. They are screaming to get out (?) but can't.

reply

That one does not ring a bell for me. I hope someone else might recognize it.

I've been a horror fan ever since I watched Saturday Nightmares on USA Network in the mid-late 80's. And although I've watched countless horror films largely recognized as scary, the only one that actually scared me was The Blair Witch Project, which came out when I was 16 or 17. Kinda funny thinking about as it's a movie a lot of people make fun of today.

Early horror I saw on TV from Saturday Nightmares are:

Spookies
Day Of the Dead
Troll
The Unnamable
The Stuff

reply

Bruh, you did not just write Burnt Offerings?
Did we just become best friends, because no one talks of the film.

That stupid Chauffeur ruined so many nights for me as a kid.
He was just so danm creepy and pale.

Another was
ClownHouse (1989)

For a long time, and even today, irrationally, I still believe that clowns are escaped mental patients.

Burnt Offerings
Great cast, terrific script, legits scary!

My Dad let me stay up late one night when I was about 7 to watch Animal House with him on the cable

I didn't get most of the jokes then but seeing The Old Man hunched over laughing gave me some kicks!

reply

Thats funny. Ya never know what dads let their kids watch. I probably didn’t see Animal House till I was in high school. My dad took my family to see The Wild Geese when I was a kid and my mom thought we were going to see a nature show. Lol

reply

Well, Daddyo was probably a six pack in and feeling all those Budweiser horses in his head but he had a fun sense of humor and let me in on some double secret probation jokes😃

Good memory!

No movies on TV when I was a kid in the 50's. Saturday Night at the Movies started in 1961 - it was a big deal to see a movie at home.

I REMEMBER WATCHING THE TOXIC AVENGER WITH MY MOTHER...I HAD TO BE UNDER 10...TO THIS DAY,I STILL GET A CREEPY VIBE FROM CERTAIN SCENES...PLUS I THINK WE CAN ALL AGREE THIS VIEWING PROBABLY HELPED SHAPE ME INTO THE OCD SOCIOPATH I AM TODAY.
