I THINK YOURE JUST MISPRONOUNCING THE WORDS...OR SOCIETY IN GENERAL...PRONUNCIATION CHANGES OVER THE YEARS.

reply

Fewcha? Only if you’re from Bahstin.

Around where I live the last three would be more like:

Few-chure
Awe-gist
Die-minned

I'm Irish Australian so I've been told I sound like I'm from Boston or new York when I'm in America.

Gym - Jim or Jim - gym

Why is "Sean" pronounced "Shaun?" ❓❓❓

reply

I can see the advantage to that. It would make English spelling easier to learn. Especially those words with the ough letter combination.

It's so confusing when:
"though" rhymes with "no."
"cough" rhymes with "off."
"rough" rhymes with "fluff."
"bough" rhymes with "cow."
"through" rhymes with "new."
"thought" rhymes with "not."

Whatchu talkin bout Willis?!

"Dearest creature in Creation,
Studying English pronunciation,

I will teach you in my verse
Sounds like corpse, corps, horse and worse.

It will keep you, Susy, busy,
Make your head with heat grow dizzy;

Tear in eye your dress you'll tear.
So shall I! Oh, hear my prayer,

Pray, console your loving poet,
Make my coat look new, dear, sew it?

Just compare heart, beard and heard,
Dies and diet, lord and word,

Sword and sward, retain and Britain,
(Mind the latter, how it's written!)

Made has not the sound of bade,
Say—said, pay—paid, laid, but plaid.

Now I surely will not plague you
With such words as vague and ague,

But be careful how you speak,
Say break, steak, but bleak and streak,

Previous, precious; fuchsia, via;
Pipe, snipe, recipe and choir,

Cloven, oven; how and low;
Script, receipt; shoe, poem, toe,

Don't you think so, reader, rather,
Saying lather, bather, father?

Finally, which rhymes with enough,
Though, through, bough, cough, hough, sough, tough??

Hiccough has the sound of sup...
My advice is: GIVE IT UP!"

Right, the spelling of English words is bonkers. We've got a few quirks in Swedish as well, but it can't be compared to the madness of English. At least you got the easiest grammar in Europe instead.

reply

French is like English in that the pronunciation can't be deduced just by reading the word.

reply

Yeah, French is rather bonkers as well.

reply

I'm jealous of Scandinavian grammar!

reply

Swedish and Norwegian and Danish are easier than Icelandic and Faroese though.

reply

Don't tell me you speak all those languages?!😱

reply

No, just Swedish.

reply

Phew, I'm already jealous enough about the grammar!😁

reply
