What's your biggest motivator to work?

Sometimes I need help being motivated. I have a list of motivators and I was wondering if you can add to it or tell me which one motivates you?

1) money
2) what money means in a positive way (what you want to buy)
3) what money means in a negative way (gotta make money to cover bills)
4) sense of accomplishment
5) you hate work so getting it over and done with ASAP motivates you

To me, number 5 is great because if I hate something I'm more likely to not daydream or get distracted and just steam through it until its done.

6) I don't want to live in a van down by the river

reply

😂💯 This man knows.

I’d also suggest that having all day every day free would get boring sooner than you’d think. Especially if you’re not independently wealthy.

Work keeps my mind sharp(ish)

It's true, most people seem to need a routine or they get into trouble

reply

Yes - and that's why this whole thing is driving me crazy. I worked from home and had the perfect routine, then when all of this started in March, (right when I retired), I was still at home, but with nothing to do. I had a hard time getting all of those projects started that I always told myself I would do when I had more time.

I got a lot more accomplished when I had a schedule to keep and juggled many things, than I do now.

reply

Sorry to hear this, I hope you have restored some balance for yourself
I totally understand your last sentiment, it's plain true

reply

Thanks, but I'm really OK. I don't miss my job because it definitely time to leave, but I do miss working and right now isn't even a good time to do volunteer work. Just trying to figure out how to include little pieces of my pre virus life into the reality of now -as most of us are.

God, wasn't he a big loss!
I loved that guy but we'll always have Tommy Boy

reply

Huge loss, bro! Did you see that Adam Sandler song he did for Chris? Its a tear jerker.

reply

Yeah, it's pretty sad and mournful but also funny and a great tribute to one of the best of my generation

Sandler did it right for Farley👍

Frankly the first 3 you mention. But I have been working the same job since October of 2008. I work as a bagger at a Kroger store. I get 40 hours a week. I live in my own 2 bedroom apartment, pay an electric bill, an internet bill, as well as DC Universe, Disney+, and Hulu.

That may not be the case in a few years when minimum wage in my state of Illinois hits $15 an hour. I fear I will lose my job then. But so will a lot of people. Prices are already going up. Right now a regular candy bar when not on sale costs $1.10. Minimum wage hits $10 an hour in July. The prices will go up more then. Farmers will not just pay their workers more money and not raise prices on their crops.

Of course mentioning all this here is stupid since most people here are leftists who don't understand basic economics or what minimum wage really is. They stupidly think if minimum wage is $15 an hour then everyone will make a better living. They stupidly think that $15 minimum wage will make it so that raises won't be needed again. They don't realize you have to make above minimum wage to make enough to support yourself even if it is $15 an hour.

So if minimum wage is $15 an hour then you will have to make $20 an hour to make a decent living. And a lot of businesses will be raising their prices to pay their workers that much. I am through with my rant and I am sure you leftists on here think that what I posted is bullcrap. But just you wait. You'll soon find it's not.

reply

I agree
If I own a store and have to pay everyone more I'm going to have to raise prices which sort of nullifies the whole arrangement

As a young man my motivation was to be able to give a huge middle finger to all those that had told me that I was worthless.

After that I wanted to be recognised as the best at what I did (comic book reference intended).

Now it’s to be able to genuinely help people (corny I know).

reply

Probably corny for most people to say but it rings true coming from you. I believe it.

reply

You my friend are too kind.

reply

My motto is: I work to live, I don't live to work.

reply

If you need motivation then you're not doing the right work. As cheesey as that sounds. If you're running around all day in a hamster wheel chasing money, try to escape. That is someone elses dream you are living.

reply

Sense of accomplishmemt is pretty much it for me. Don't really need the money anymore but if I don't go to work I get restless. So sense of accomplishment and to balance the day.
