Celebrities who turned their back on fame

Not cast out, but deliberately decided that fame was not to their liking.
The more famous at the time they turned their back the better

This might be a short list...

Cat Stevens

Dave Chappelle

reply

Rick Moranis

reply

Moranis didn't retire because he disliked fame, he retired because his wife died and he had young children to raise. He became a house-dad, and the world would be a better place if more people could afford to do the same.

Although if he really liked being famous, I suppose he could have gone back to acting when his kids were grown.

reply

True, but he's a good example of someone who retired because there was something more important to him than fame.

reply

I didn't know that.

reply

Agnetha Fältskog from ABBA

reply

Audrey Hepburn - she became a nun.

reply

So far this is a odd group.

In this boat you have

Cat Stevens, Rick Moranis, Dave Chappelle, the singer from ABBA, and Audrey Hepburn.

Like a weird Gillian's Island.

reply

Oh and Sinead O'Connor ! She became a lunatic, or always was one. I'm not sure which.

reply

Sinéad has been certified since 87 ;)

Believe it or not though her musical output has been fairly consistent throughout her career, I don't think she ever retired. Her 2014 album 'I'm Not Bossy, I'm the Boss' is pretty magnificent actually.

But yeah, mad as a cut snake, bless her heart.

reply

Yes she is a great singer. I have a CD of hers where she sings traditional Irish songs and it's really good.

reply

You can hear that influence even in her mainstream work, it's a haunting voice. Quite unique.

reply

I thought that O'Connor was still trying to keep her career in music going, in the rare moments when she's stable enough to make a performance schedule.

reply

That was Dolores Hart.

reply

No, no. They made a documentary about it called ' The Nun's Story '. Audrey went to Africa and everything !

reply

Ms Hepburn went to Africa as part of her charity work for UNICEF.

reply

There you go. Once a nun always a nun.

reply

No, Audrey became a call girl and married George Peppard.

reply

Yes she did that too. Fell off the nun wagon.

reply

Exactly. Apparently he's thinking of the movie "A Nun's Story" when Audrey Hepburn played a nun.

reply

Obviously he was trying to be funny. But an actress turning nun actually did happen.

reply

Whoosh! His joke went right over my head. Yes, I remember Delores Hart's story.

reply

Jason Scott Lee. He became a farmer in Hawaii.

reply

Delores Hart, actress who appeared in some fluffy sixties films, and who made a movie with Elvis. She became a nun, and I believe she's a Mother Superior now.

Grace Kelly, a.k.a. Her Serene Highness Princess Grace of Monaco.

John Deacon, bass player for Queen. Completely left public life.

Meg White

I don't think Hayden Christiansen so much left Hollywood, as was ditched by Hollywood.

And one of the ABBA ladies has retired from public life for a long time.

reply

Agnetha - see above :)

[deleted]

Natalie Portman is still active.

reply

Also the blonde one from Ace of Base.

reply

I think this has to be a willing turning your back on fame.
