Me, much more in the first month. Had to stock up on food for me and the pup, and a few other things I normally wouldn't have bought. Plus I was already almost out of several things like paper towels, TP, and bleach.
I'd say a good $1k over what I normally spend. Now it's hard to tell because I've moved and need a number of things for my new place, so that doesn't count. I put everything on my cash-back CC, so can't easily separate out the new place stuff from the regular expenses stuff.
I spent less. I haven't been able to go to the stores that I would usually buy movies at and haven't been able to go to the movies so I have spent less than normal.
About the same. I've replaced my enjoyment of movie theaters and bowling with buying crap on Amazon. My son and I have officially started collecting Funko Pops.
That's an excellent question. If so, very little. I'm not going to be buying pantry items, TP, and some other things for a while, so if I amortise them, probably not.
my spending has upticked a little bit. my grocery spending went up somewhat in april, mostly because i was doing a bit of stocking up on a few things. i'm trying to consciously get my spending down for may.
& i've been spending more at the indian buffet down the street. i bought a $200 gift card there to help them out with their cash flow, and i've been getting take-out from them every week (in the pre-pandemic world, it was only every two weeks). partly i'm doing that because i like them and really want to help them out, but it's also being done out of pure selfishness, because if they go out of business and i never get to have their navratan korma again, my life will be a shell of what it was.
Oh wait, I forgot about the extra expense of takeout. Like you, I've been trying to do my part to support the local restaurants. It's wonderful you helped your favourite Indian buffet out with a $200 gift certificate! Even if it was in part out of selfishness.
I spread it around to the places I like best, or am just discovering because of the move. Normally I'd do takeout every couple of weeks. Now it's about 4 times a week. But, as with you, I benefit from it. It's very nice to just place an order and then go pick up some yum food 😋
one thing i forgot to mention is that i've tended to avoid the bigger supermarkets over the past two months - they're a little too crowded, the lines move a touch too slowly, making me have to sit in there with that annoying mask on for much longer than i'd like. which has led me to going to the smaller grocer across the street more regularly - fewer people, less time in the store, but a bit more expensive. so that's a reason for my spending to trend up as well.
Way less. I have bought more groceries, but we haven't gone out for dinner - so basically a wash. No movies, no salon visits, I never shopped much online before the virus and that hasn't changed.
I can't travel, don't need any clothes. My Spectrum cable bill did go up about $20 - shame on them for doing that right now.
Oh that's right, you're a traveler. Cruises in particular. How do you feel about taking cruises now? Any differently?
😡 @ Spectrum. Shame on them. When other companies are going out of their way to try to *help* people during this difficult time, they're taking advantage. Way to go.
My husband received a bunch of restaurant gift cards for his birthday in February so we have been using those for carry-out resulting in no out of pocket expense for us. We probably have a few more weeks left and then they will be gone.
As far as cruising, well everything right now has been suspended so until it starts back up it's a moot point for me to even think about it. I will be surprised if any cruises begin before next year, but the cruise lines keep posting schedules and then canceling them 30 days out. They are proposing all kinds of protocols - wearing masks, social distancing, no pools open - things that will keep me away from cruising until a vaccine or very effective treatments are made available to the general public. I had a June cruise that was cancelled and so I received a full refund, but I have another one booked for November and right now I'm just waiting to see what happens between now and mid August when my final payment is due.
Spectrum - yes, really terrible of them. With so many people out of work and nothing to do but watch TV, you would think they would be giving folks a break and maybe even temporally do a price reduction. We only have cable TV for my husband and I use it for my internet, but if it was just up to me I would have it for basic service and stream everything else. Unfortunately, that won't work with him and we have every channel know to mankind and pay accordingly - sigh.
I'm sure I'm spending less. The bill for a grocery trip might appear higher, but I'm shopping every other week and going to one store only - not price shopping for the best prices. I haven't spent any money on improvements to my backyard oasis, either. Of course the gasoline bill is lower too, what with lower prices and very little driving. I'm not must of an online shopper. It's a last resort if I can't find locally something I need.
Aren't you also ordering groceries online for pickup? That'd cut down on impulse purchases, which would cut down on your bill too.
I'm still doing a fair amount of driving, between the move and shopping for various things for the new place. In ways I like online shopping, but in other ways I don't and find often enough I get overwhelmed by too much selection and still can't find the things I'm looking for. Good for some things, not for others.
Yes, these days I order groceries online, but one day last week I got up early to do the grocery shopping myself during the "vulnerable people" shopping time at 6 AM. Not my favorite time to go but there were very few people in the store. If I order online I have to wait as long as four days - and that's for pickup, not delivery. The first time I ordered online, I could pick up my order later the same day, but now there's a bit of a wait. It takes a bit of time to figure out my order, and if I forget something, well, it's a pain.
That morning last week I decided to go myself because there were a few things the online service didn't show. And I also wanted a chance to choose my own meat because I don't want substitutions on my order - mostly because I'm wary of what might be substituted. If I could choose to okay subs for specific items and not others, I'd feel more comfortable. But I can't, so... I mean, if I order ground beef and they're out and they give me pork chops or a roast instead?? I ordered taco fixings one week and my order included everything except the meat, so I ended up with things I can't use until I get the meat.
4 days is too long to wait. Unless you plan well ahead, which we've already established elsewhere that I don't, lol. Same or next day would be fine.
It would be annoying to order everything to make tacos, except the primary ingredient for the filling 😐. They should have a list of what subs would be okay. Like ground turkey would be a good sub for ground beef, and vice versa.
All of the sudden I can pick up an order at Kroger the same day or at the latest the next day, depending on when I place the order. Until last week, it was around 4 days out.
I agree with GlenEllyn, I like to pick out my own meat and occasionally, there are items that aren't available that when I go into the store I can find them. The other day I wanted to make some Rueben sandwiches and I got everything but the corned beef, so I had to go inside to pick it up at the deli.
I'm okay with them picking my ground beef, but anything else, I want to choose. Same thing with produce - I prefer to pick my own. Choosing oranges or apples isn't a big deal, but with other things, I want to choose.
Four days is too long, especially when you run out of a vital basic item. (Personally, I hate being out of milk.) But I just made another online order and I can pick it up on Monday. That's more reasonable. I suspect the wait is shorter because a lot have folks have opted to go back out, in spite of the current stay-home order that will ease on Monday. My grocery store has also reserved two hours, 10 AM to noon each day for vulnerable folks to make their pickups.
About the same
I don't currently have to commute or park but I have spent a lot on landscaping and gardening since we got shut in
It seems the whole neighborhood has continued to
spend, my area is full of bored dads mowing the grass and planting flowers, endlessly raking and mulching....
Thanks, I hope so
4 yards topsoil 2 weeks ago
5 yards Pea Gravel last week
6 yards brown mulch today...
2 outdoor fireplaces, gravel patio with log benches, 7 new shrubs and about 15 transplanted shrubs, new veggie garden area...
Total reorganization!
Gotta keep busy Cat but I bet you know this what with your new home and pup😃
I hope you're settling into your lovely home very well😙
