Songs that you're embarrassed to admit..

you didn't know who wrote them. For many years I thought Jimi Hendrix was doing a cover of Bob Dylan's The Wind Cries Mary. Turns out Jimi wrote the damn thing! I could even hear Bob singing it in my head!

reply

Conversely, I didn’t know for some years that All Along the Watchtower wasn’t written by Jimi, but actually Dylan. So if you put our ignorances together, it evens out and now we’re non dummies!

reply

I'm happy with that theory

reply

I always thought Lips Like Sugar was by U2, but it's by Echo and the Bunnymen.

reply

I just had a listen to the song. He does sound like Bono

reply

I thought Helter Skelter was by U2 lol.

reply

I thought The Man Who Sold the World was written by Nirvana but Bowie wrote it.

reply

Admittedly I wasn't aware the song existed before I heard Nirvana cover it

reply

Me neither. Same with "Where Did You Sleep Last Night", which they also covered oMTV Unplugged in New York.

reply

I was surprised to find out Neil Diamond wrote Red Red Wine when it was a big hit for UB40.

reply

As Johnny Carson would say, I did not know that.

reply

I prefer UB40's version

reply

Another example where the cover is better than the original. Sorry, Neil.

reply

A couple of others come to mind

Manfred Mann - Blinded By the Light
Joe Cocker - A Little Help from My Friends

reply

The First Cut Is The Deepest was written by Cat Stevens. Rod Stewart had the best cover.

I didn't realize that Dazed and Confused by Led Zeppelin was a cover.

reply

I had no idea until just now

reply

I will always love you, written and first performed by Dolly Parton. Always thought it was Whitney’s tune!

reply

Whitney nails it

reply

Nothing compares 2 you, is another. Heard that song for years and didn’t know it was actually written by Prince until he passed away.

reply

It took me few years to discover it was Prince

reply

I heard it first from Stereophonics. Then found out it's by Sinéad O’Connor. Now I learn it's actually Prince... :D
