All Right You Guys! Who’s Hoarding All The Toilet Paper?!

Also, baby wipes! This country has gone stark raven mad. Why the run on toilet paper? We had to buy some today for fear there wouldn’t be any tomorrow. Amazon is out! My friend paid $7.29 for 4 mega rolls! She bought the last 4 packs.

Disney and Universal here in Orlando have shut down. Hells Bells Disney only shuts down for a day when we have a hurricane! Schools are closed.

I’m scheduled to fly back to Mississippi on Wed. the 18th.

reply

It's a communist plot ! Call out the National Guard !

There has been no toilet paper in my local supermarket when I have shopped there for the past month. I live alone and had a little stash put by but if this goes on much longer...

reply

I agree! We need the National Guard stationed by the empty shelves in order to protect the new shipment...which is questionable. Baby wipes! Can you believe baby wipes have disappeared? There’s going to be a lot of clogged toilets if folks use those in place of toilet paper! Plumbers unite!

Well, if we still received a morning paper or a Sears catalog we could do what we used to do. Take a piece between your hands and rub it back & forth to soften the sheet and wipe away! They used to use corn cobs also. BTW, hands up for those of you who have used an outdoor privy. Not the blue box for contractors...real privies. So much fun and they smell so damn good!🤚🏻🤚🏻

There’s a domino affect going on with this virus.

reply

We can joke about it now but this is likely to get serious. This is only the beginning of the pandemic in the West and it's going to get much worse before it gets better. If some people have lost their senses already imagine what could happen when they have reason to. The Government needs to step in and take charge and the sooner the better. And if that means putting a few armed national guards in each supermarket to control people then they should do it.

reply

Right now we can joke, but I tend to agree with you. How much longer before our food supply is affected? Schools closing, daycare will be also. I heard today China is over run to the point crematoriums can’t keep up with those who have succumbed to the virus.

The domino affect has definitely begun.

reply

My take is that Covid-19 will affect a lot of people and unfortunately, many will die. Most will come through it okay. But the economic effects will affect everyone. That's a real issue.

reply

To be blunt most of the people who will die will be over 80. The key is to stop the spread to the larger working population especially those in key industries like food production and transportation. China is rebounding and so will the USA/Canada.

reply

They've shut down Disneyland here too, and probably Universal as well as any of the other theme parks.

I still can't figure out why TP is the #1 item there's a universal run on. It's not like we don't have alternatives, even if relatively primitive. Water makes even less sense.

As it happens, before all this, I needed TP, paper towels, AA batteries, and peanut butter, so they were on my list. Little did I know 😳. I did buy bigger packages of some than I normally would have (I have little storage space here) but then called it a day.

Don't know if schools are shut down here or not. I know Stanford has gone to online classes for now.

Stay well, Ksp!

reply

Wisconsin just closed schools statewide. A concern is what will badly-needed healthcare workers do when their children can't be in school? How do they go to work without childcare?

reply

That's a good point about childcare for healthcare workers. I imagine someone's already thought of this possibility and is doing something about it. Like giving healthcare workers a stimulus to cover childcare. Everyone knows how important our healthcare workers are.

reply

Our governor just closed all schools statewide (Minnesota) for at least two weeks. We have 35 cases now, up from 14 on Friday and 21 yesterday.

reply

there's a good twitter thread here on why toilet paper runs are basically the same as bank runs.

short answer: even if you think you don't need tp in the next month, you think everyone else is going out and panic buying, and you want to avoid being the one sucker cleaning himself with a sock in a month.

so you run out and buy four family packs, not because you need it, but based on the actions of others.

so the fear of a run creates the run.

each individual is actually making a rational choice based on what he sees will be the collective action of others, resulting in the run.

it's something like a classic prisoner's dilemma. if we could assure that everyone would act rationally, we would all act rationally, but since we can't control the actions of others & think they likely won't be rational, we are compelled to do the thing that leads to a less optimal outcome.

https://twitter.com/JustinWolfers/status/1234993431375536128

reply

Yes, that's exactly why I bought more than I usually do.

Well, also to prepare in case I need to self-quarantine for up to a month. There's *some* rationality to wanting to have enough TP on hand, it's just that this has become irrational, blown out of all proportion.

reply

honestly, i'm not worried about some people buying tp or hand sanitizer or whatever. it just means some people won't have to buy that stuff for a year.

i'm way more worried about all the reports i'm hearing out of new york and other large cities of people behaving normally. busy bars, packed restaurants. that's something i really worry about.

france is closing all non-essential shops. spain is about to do the same. israel too.

i don't think we're that far away from having to do the same here. this is not the time for normal mingling.

reply

I wasn't worried about the supply running out, only personally, during my self-imposed quarantine. I didn't buy any hand sanitiser. Don't use it. Yes, lots of people are going to be stocked for a long time with these items there are runs on.

It's surprising there are lots of people out there going to restaurants and bars, as if nothing's changed. A poster here is going to the gym to workout daily, even though they're currently ill. I don't get it.

I think we're going to close non-essential businesses for a few weeks. Grocery stores, gas stations, maybe a few other businesses will stay open.

reply

It wouldn't surprise me if closing non-essential businesses becomes necessary. Too many people are acting as if nothing is different, everything is fine - the exception being the panic buyers, of course. They don't understand how quickly healthcare facilities can become overwhelmed and unable to treat patients - not just Covid-19 patients, but any patients! What has them thinking it can't happen here - wherever "here" is?? It's already here, and due to lack of testing we don't even know how truly widespread (or not) it is.

reply

It is kind of shocking how senselessly some people are behaving, between the panic hoarders and at the other end of the spectrum those who refuse to respond sensibly.

Not sure if you read it or not but yesterday I found out only 3 people have been tested here since it began, and although people aren't being tested, the powers that be in their infinite wisdom refused to take action until there are 5 verified cases. WHAT?! Local decision-makers with their heads in the sand, great.

Exactly, treating patients with the coronavirus is began enough, but if we don't -- individually and collectively -- take sensible action right now to prevent it from spreading -- NO PATIENTS will be able to be taken care of, or few. This doesn't have to happen, but WAKE UP, PEOPLE! Don't be an arsehole.

I think companies are doing their very best to ensure their plant and warehouse employees are well. That goes double for healthcare workers.

reply

Makes you wonder how they decided that 5 cases is the threshold for testing. Considering how easy it seems to be to catch this, five cases could quickly become 25 cases or more within just a few days. Yikes.

I get the feeling that a lot of folks, who really should be tested, are not. Authorities don't have enough test kits, so people are told they don't need to be tested even though it would be prudent to do so. Until production of test kits catches up, we're flying blind and aren't taking appropriate actions that could cut the infection rate. Once you have one case in your vicinity, tests should be easily available. I'm thankful that there are a lot of folks who realize they should self-quarantine and do so. It could be worse.

reply

I'm discovering there are a lot of posts I've missed. This is one of them.

Yes, using 5 as a threshold, considering how contagious it is and considering they've been doing virtually no testing, is extremely irresponsible.

They've changed their tune. Several days ago there was one confirmed case in this county, and as a result they've made the moves they should have done a week ago.

I agree, a lot of people who should be tested haven't been. If it really was about there being a shortage of tests, people should have been told to self-quarantine, social distance, and the rest of it long ago.

reply

And it's all those panic buyers who are creating shortages. As long as warehouses and suppliers can keep working, shortages will be short-lived, assuming of course, that their workers stay healthy.

reply

Exactly. I'm not worried about shortages except in the short-term. Even if workers fall ill, for the majority it's mild and at worst they'd be out of commission for a few weeks.

What concerns me most is people who are at risk not having what they need to get through this, due to the greedy panic-buying hoarders. And those who've stockpiled things like masks and gloves, creating a shortage for those in the medical field who *really* need them. Also that all this panicking is contagious, creates stress, which we know lowers the immune system and (ironically) makes us more likely to catch this (as well as other ills).

Things seem to be a bit more stable over the past few days. That's good.

reply

I went out for dinner last night at an upscale steakhouse and it was packed, but we decided that was the last time. Time to stay at home and do carry-out, home delivery, or home cooking.

reply

Women use too much toilet paper! 4 X 4 mega rolls would last me over 4 months. Some people are buying a years supply.

reply

Satan we don't talk about that here on earth...

reply

Men don't wipe. Skid marks.

reply

Cat, I’ve often wondered how men do wipe...they have more equipment to move out of the way. ☺️ See me blush?

reply

🤔

Is this the explanation for the otherwise inexplicable skid marks? Have you solved a decades-old, previously unsolved mystery?

reply

🤣You just had to do it..didn’t you? Make me choke on my coffee! Did you see kawowski’s reply to me? He got me also!

reply

😁 Sorry, Ksp. I'll offer you a napkin. (So far there's no stockpiling of them. ... I think.)

reply

My daughter called from Mississippi and said things are flying off the shelf there. She said napkins are at a premium now. She asked me to go to Amazon and order. I no sooner put items in my cart...they would disappear. Not available! Baby wipes are getting hard to locate. I’ve always cleaned my little fur babies after a doodle and a wee wee. I just thought of something. What if we have to start squatting with the doggies and kitties in a litter pan?

reply

Napkins too? Oh Jaysus, what next?? I'm well stocked with napkins already so didn't look to see if there's a run on them here.

I always buy baby wipes because they're less expensive and more gentle than those disposable bum wipes, and I like to have that oh-so-fresh feeling. A bidet would be better, but I don't have one. Your Miss Molly doesn't need her bum and other business wiped after she's done her business, honest.

I'm NOT going in a litter pan! If worst comes to worst I'll make like my dog and go outside (there are over 10 acres here). Which means I'd need a shovel, like when you camp. But I can't see anything like that happening. Our toilets will continue to flush (providing we're not on a septic and it's not flooding!).

reply

Oh, yes Miss Molly does need wiping. They drip and sometimes the doodle gets stuck on them. I can always tell when she needs a major cleaning. She’ll be sitting ever so still. I’ll walk by and ask her (she answers of course) “What’s wrong with you?” She doesn’t move and I swear she’s gritting her teeth! :-) So I check and shor’ nuf she’s got doodle stuck. I put her in the laundry sink and wash her behind, dry her set her down and she starts dancin’. Honestly when I see in her litter pan she’s done a doodle, I raise my arms and yell “Touchdown!” She dances and turns her little behind toward me to be cleaned! Honestly!

reply

I use roughly (play on words) 3 feet. I also use double the amount of floss needed...for my teeth that is! 🤗 I suppose gals who wear thong undies don’t have to use much TP...the undies do the work. Did I actually write this?🙇🏼‍♀️

reply

WOW...TWO VERY IMPRESSIVE POSTS IN A ROW...BALLS AND THONGS....BRAVO!

reply

I try to please. Like that, did ya? Sounds like you did OK surgery wise. Good! Wasn’t that stuff they added to the IV great? Versed is good happy stuff.

reply

We're switching gears on this thread.

Mandatory: please state your average square per session usage, ply quantity, and describe wiping technique. We're going to find out who the problem individuals are HERE AND NOW.

reply

I need 1.24 squares per .95 bathroom sessions. I prefer to not reveal my technique as it's highly classified information.

reply

The CIA are now on their way to transport you to a secret Montauk testing facility. At 1.24 sq/.95 sesh you are classified as exceptionally gifted and your technique may hold the key to the survival of the human race.

reply

I'm unavailable. Sorry.

reply

🎵 Believe it or not Catbookss isn't at home, please leave a message at the beep. If I was home I'd pick up the phone. Where could I beeee. Believe it or not, I'm not hooooome. 🎵

reply

She's https://moviechat.org/tt4547056/The-Girl-with-All-the-Gifts, which makes her very much in demand and understandably busy.

reply

Real talk for a sec, those numbers are inconceivable to me. Flabbergasted to imagine how EVEN!

reply

Hey db, how have you been? Everything OK? Somehow I keep missing your posts.

reply

You know?!? 😱

reply

How did you get my outgoing message?!?! You, you doxxer, you! 😠

reply

🤣 Just too funny! What have I wrought with this OP?

reply

And hand sanitizer

reply

We're just going to have to start using paper towels. I know it may not seem that way, but it might just be more economical. If they start buying them out, we'll just have to start using, um... our bath towels.

reply

But, you’re asking for plumbing problems, unless maybe use the real cheap ones as they are easily torn and disintegrate quicker. We also can cut down on TP by adding a bidet to our toilets. They are cheap in cost and end up being more cost effective than TP.

reply

Eh?
Who said anything about flushing them down the commode? [confused]

reply

You’re right...they don’t have to be, but I wouldn’t want them thrown in the trash. Eww and Yucky! Especially if someone has stomach issues.

reply

Just pretend you are in Mexico. TP is not flushed but disposed of in a little basket by the toilet.

reply

Or coffee filters.

😎

reply

Interesting choice. 🤘

reply

That was another dude's joke.

😎

reply

We're not having these problems. I'm sorry the people around you forgot how to think.

reply

Don’t you live in one of the Carolinas? If so, your area hasn’t gone TP crazy? It’s late for me so I don’t quite understand your last sentence. Not only late, but the age factor is really starting to set in! 🤬
I’ve been in Central Florida staying with a lifetime friend and have been ill most of the time. Another 🤬

reply

I could see NC from the back door if the mountain didn't block my view. So rude! Lol
Nah, folks here are generally pretty practical. I've yet to see panic buying of Anything, let alone Universal Ass Wiper.
Tho the bread shelves were a bit thin yesterday.

You ain't old! Forgetting stuff is normal. Hell, yesterday I had to go thru my phone contacts to remember my niece's name (she had a beautiful baby boy a few days ago!).
Gainesville, Fl was where I went to high school and I'm familiar with the area around it. Are you staying near there?

reply

Saint Cloud, my hometown, in Osceola County the fastest growing county in the nation! They are stripping every blade of grass, downing every tree for more and more homes. Disney has literally ruined a paradise! Damn I hate that Rat...er mouse!

reply

The truly sad part is that when Disney is eventually gone for good - so is all the flora and fauna.
A lot of my father's people are from around Chiefland, Fl, just inland of Cedar Key. If you drive due west from Gainesville to Cedar Key, after you cross highway 27, you'll pass thru the outskirts of a long abandoned town where my father and most of his siblings were born in a homemade house, a shack really.
The name of this forgotten town - Otter Creek.
I kid you not 😅

reply

If you’re familiar with Yeehaw Junction, State Rd 60 and Florida's Turnpike, the historic Desert Inn was severely damaged recently by a semi.

reply

Daaaaaamn!
Yeah I know Yeehaw Junction. Haven't been there in 25-30 years. Looks like there's no reason to go back now lol!

Too soon?
My bad...
😃

reply

Served damn good food!

reply

That's very interesting! So far, you're the first person I've seen to say that. I wonder where the panic stockpiling is highest and lowest, and why.

Are you in or near a town? Just wondering if population makes a difference.

I'm just outside a small town, which is outside of a small city. I know entire shelves have been cleared daily in this general area.

Damn, I need bread. Got out the loaf I had last night and the bottom half was mold. I don't want to go out shopping again. Didn't look at the bread aisle so no clue if people are hoarding it or not.

reply

Damn. Moldy bread. That blows. If it was like cheese you could just trim it off.

reply

That's what I did last night, but once bread starts to get moldy, it spreads fast. I'm going to have to go buy some tonight, preferably a loaf that's chock full of preservatives!

reply

Right!

reply

Donald trumo today decared a national emergency.

reply

Ok and... ?

reply

Because of the run on toilet paper? 😂 I’m sorry that’s the first thing that popped into this old noggin’!

reply

Yes! Trump has declared today to be National Emergency TP Day. We celebrate by going out and buying 50 30-packs of the TP brand of our choice 🍻

reply

😅😂🤣Oh cut it out! You are really feeling better aren’t you? My tummy is too sore to be laughing at your posts. I’ve been ill for over a week here at my friend’s house. Going through TP like crazy! Of all times for the daily IBS to be kicking into gear! It’s a good thing it’s not raining here. She’s on a septic and when the rain is non-stop the toilets won’t flush! God is good! 🤗

reply

😁 Yes, I pretty much feel back to normal. Thank god! Took a long time to go away.

Oh no, I'm so sorry you've been sick and you're away from home. Yikes, of all times to have anything that requires more TP than usual, and more flushing!! You've got a double whammy there 😳

I hope you get better VERY SOON! (They say laughter is the best medicine so keep laughing :)

reply

Funny, but that's not why he declared it. And any so called "national or state emergency" is just a legal formality to free up money to be spend on a particular problem.
