Abolish Daylight Savings Time (DST)

It's March, and here we go again with this senseless changing of the clocks. DST needs to be abolished. It accomplishes nothing but the disruption of human biological cycles. It doesn't save energy, or benefit the farmers, or any of the other myths that continue to circulate. And it doesn't make the days longer.

A day is always 24 hours in length. Yes, there is more sunlight during the spring and summer months only because the Earth is tilted on its axis with the Northern Hemisphere facing the Sun. The converse occurs during the fall and winter. It's called the change of seasons, and it all balances out in the long run. Resetting the clock has no effect whatsoever on the position of the Sun. You have merely been fooled by the government into getting up one hour earlier, which creates the illusion of a "longer day."

Standard Time is the true time, with noon recorded when the Sun appears highest in the sky, hence the term "high noon." DST is fake time, and this World War II era practice should have been scrapped decades ago.

Standard Time should be the permanent time. Those who still wish to pursue that mythical "longer day" are free to get up one hour earlier during the spring and summer. Employers could be encouraged to offer earlier starting/quitting times during these months.

Congress is responsible for this DST nonsense. Contact your representatives and tell them to put a stop to this foolishness once and for all.

reply

nah

reply

Nope. If anything it should be DST all year long. I hate getting off work when it's dark.

reply

Just start work an hour earlier. Employers could be encouraged to offer this.

reply

Sound great but it's not gonna happen.

reply

We have this in the UK and it doesn’t bother me. The ‘disruption of human biological cycles’ part made me chuckle; it’s an hour, it’s not like you’re flying to Australia, lol.

reply

It's no laughing matter.

reply

I fly all round the world all the time, so I understand how it feels to have your body clock altered. An hour really isn’t that big a deal.

reply

It is retarded.

It sends home the message to me that reality doesn't matter.

Oh what time is it?

Whatever time we say! It's doesn't matter motherfucker!!

reply

Here in CA, last year we voted to ditch Standard Time and keep Daylight Savings year round. I can't wait. Hopefully they'll instate it this year.

One thing we're in agreement on is changing back and forth is needlessly disruptive.

Time's essentially a human-made construct anyway 🤷‍♀️

reply

Our previous provincial government tried to do that exact thing, but people protested because it would make some hockey games too late. Grrrr.

reply

Did people vote on it? I don't remember specifically, but as I recall the measure won by a lot, so there's no room for people to grouse about it here.

reply

We didn't get to the voting stage.

reply

Aww. Well I'm sorry for those of you who wanted permanent DST. Can't wait until they enact it here.

reply

I think once a few places enact it more will follow. At least I hope so.

reply

I hope so. I mean, we're only talking about the games being an hour later.

reply

But if you are on the east coast that would be after bedtime!!! SMH.

I don't watch sports so I don't really care.

reply

"Time's essentially a human-made construct anyway."

Maybe, but it's based on concrete factors. Like noon, for example. Noon is recorded when the Sun appears highest in the sky, which has to do with the position of the observer as affected by the rotation of the Earth. A real event.

With DST, it's noon but the clocks are set at 1:00 pm. Bogus time.

reply

I don’t like it one bit. It’s not needed any longer, so I wish we could stay on Standard Time. There are those in Congress who want Florida to be on DST year round. The bill has been passed, but is on hold.

For one thing school kids are standing at the bus stop when it’s still dark. Florida is a two time zone state. “The Florida PTA urged Scott (Governor at the time) to veto the state bill, warning that schoolchildren could be endangered at bus stops and walking to school in darkness. Teens, with little driving experience, would also have to drive to high school for more days in the dark than they do now.

But if Congress approves the change for Florida alone, it would find itself isolated among Atlantic coast states. During the winter, it would be one hour ahead of the rest of the Eastern Time Zone, with prime time TV starting an hour later.“

The simple and only safe solution is for Congress to abolish DST.

reply

You can always move to Arizona. They don't have DST.

reply

But they have miserable weather. No thanks.

reply

so you would not put the clocks ahead in the spring??

reply

No. Leave it on Standard Time, which is the true time, as I explained in my original post. With DST all you are doing is getting up one hour earlier.

Anyone who wants to get up earlier is still welcome to do so. Quit tampering with the clocks and stop living on bogus time. The "longer day" is a myth.

reply

From where I am I'd rather stay on DST. It's nice to have daylight until about 11:30 pm in June. The sun comes up at 5 am with DST. Don't really need it coming up at 4.

reply

I like DST! It stays light longer. I hate driving in the dark!

reply

It's "light longer" only because the Earth is tilted on its axis with the Northern Hemisphere facing the Sun. Resetting the clock has no effect on sunrise or sunset.

reply

I do like the long summer nights when it's light till 9 pm.
