What Is Your Favourite Unknown Horror Movie?

This discussion is about listing our favourite lesser known horror films, If like me you are a fan of the genre, you will likely have sat through a large amount of crappy or cheesy horror flicks, but every once in a while you can come across a film that makes you ask yourself, Why Have I Never Seen This Film Until Now?

So please feel free to mention any film that you feel to be a real find, you can also give a brief description of it (even if its just an IMDb Synopsis) but please try and avoid mentioning spoilers on the film as that will make people less inclined to watch it.

Lake Mungo
A docu/drama style horror about a grieving family. Some found footage that sends shivers down your spine

Lovely Molly
A newly wed young woman moves into her childhood home with hubby. Her dark past haunts her.

Observance
A guy moves into an abandoned building and is paid to spy on the woman living across the road. Some weird shit starts to happen

I will add
They're Watching (2016) - guilty pleasure and a wicked ending

Blood Sucking Freaks (1976) - horrible acting on par with the Gruesome Twosome, cheesy effects, mysogyny, reminds me of a Wizard of Gore wannabe, but there's something about it that I liked.

Asylum Blackout (2011) - Cooks at an asylum trapped after a blackout attacked by psychos. I think I liked it because of some of the performances

The Girl Next Door (2007) - truly a horror because of how horrified it makes you feel. Loosely based on true events.

Les 7 jours du talion (2010) Story has been done before, a little last house on the left ish, but pretty good

Pontypool (2008) - perhaps not so unknown but worth a watch just for Stephen McHattie.

Contracted (2013)
Alyce (2011)
Nina Forever (2015)
Night Junkies (2007)

reply

I don't know if they're unknown so much as not talked about anymore, but I will list them anyway:

First Power (1990)
The People under the Stairs (1991)
The Descent (2005)

Also really into Korean horror films, like The Host (2006) and A Werewolf Boy (2012).

reply

I had completely forgotten about The First Power. I used to have such a crush on Lou Diamond Phillips.

The Descent is one of my favourite horror movies.

reply

Ugh, who didn't love 90s Lou Diamond Phillips?

At last! Someone who knows The Descent and recognizes its superiority to other films haha. No one I know remembers this movie, if they ever saw it. And The Descent 2 is actually not bad also.

reply

I didn't mind the second one, but as I am a fan of the original ending, there never should have been that sequel.

reply

The First Power is a good film, Lou Diamond Philips is an actor I do like to see in horror films and I believe this was one of his first horror films (or his first in a prominent role).

Cult (2013) AKA Karuto
A haunted house japanese found footage movie. It's not great, but it has some weird charm. A guilty pleasure.

YellowBrickRoad (2010)
Another found footage. Very low-budget. It's not traditional horror, but a slow-pacing nightmare, one of those movies that let you thinking for a while.

Southbound (2015)
Australian. Several horror shorts. The stories are connected and every little detail matters. One of those movies that get better in the second watch.

Ava's Possessions (2015)
Horror comedy. A girl recovering in a therapy group for victims of demonic possession. For some reason, I love this movie

reply

southbound is a big favourite of mine. i think it's the best of the horror anthology renaissance from this past decade.

reply

Agreed. And one of the guys behind is the same one that made the best short in V/H/S, the one called 'Siren', with the vampire girl.

reply

i agree that siren in the best segment in vhs, absolutely - i believe i'd heard before that they are the same creators, but that info had fallen out of my head at some point. thanks.

reply

Agreed as well. I was skeptical going it and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was.

Terrorvision (1986) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvcNWKqf2xE

Happy Birthday to Me 1981
A Tale of Two Sisters 2003

reply

I've always had a soft spot for Happy Birthday to Me. I didn't see that end coming.

reply

You see that ending and your like..what was that! I loved it.

reply

'A Tale of Two Sisters'... unknown, not really... it's the most praised Asian horror movie (in close competition with Ringu).

reply

I think it's still pretty unknown. Americans don't like subtitles.

reply

Bloodsuckers (aka Vampire Wars: Battle for the Universe)

This is a fun outer space vampire flick I've always enjoyed. It has a good cast and is entertaining in a campy way.
