2009-2019 - What's changed?

Normally a whole decade you can look back and go 'wow things were so different', but I'm struggling to think what is so different.

I can only think of the following:

Technological:
Full transition to touch screen phones (started in 2007)
Apps for everything (we didn't use many apps in 2009)

Social
Redefinition of marriage in many countries ("Catholic" Ireland even brought in abortion)
Americans embracing 'pride month' on a big scale (I don't think it was mainstream in 2009, correct me if I'm wrong)

Political
In 2009 nobody would have guessed that Donald Trump would follow Obama

Cinema
No major changes. Avatar was made in 2009, and Star Trek reboot. Both have aged well.

All of these things to me, seem like minimal changes for an entire decade. Is there something I'm missing?

more streaming services.
cord cutting.

reply

Do you mean like wi-fi everywhere?

reply

A lot more streaming services than Netflix and Amazon.

reply

Netflix isn't mailing nearly as many discs as they used to.

reply

the most important change to me is that the rate of absolute world poverty has continued to plunge.

https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/declining-global-poverty-share-1820-2015?time=1820..2015

in 2008, 18.65% of the world lived on less than $1.90/day.
in 2015, the most current year available, it was 9.6%, and it is almost certainly now around or below 8%.
the absolute collapse in poverty is an economic miracle, and almost certainly the most important story that most people don't talk or know about.

capitalism at work in china, india and africa.

reply

absolutely.

reply

second golden age of television usurping cinema

reply

That's a good point, streaming services changing the game. Netflix being the prime example.

reply

An excellent point!

Just short of an extra billion people on the planet.

PC Insanity

You can't say or do anything without offending some moronic snowflake asshole, or group of same!

reply

I’m offended on behalf of someone I’ve never met, so.....um.....so there!

reply

Next response you can expect is, " You're outta here...you're on Ignore!"

reply

Followed by the victorious sounding 'Reported!'

reply

Precisely.

😎

reply

No, I disagree.

😎

reply

It's always been like this, but it's just now that everyone has a voice thanks to social media and widespread internet.

reply

No, I disagree. It was never like this.

😎

reply

Yes it has. People have always had a problem with stupid stuff. The conservatives were getting triggered over the same stuff they are nowadays.

reply

And the moronic Leftards are now being triggered by EVERYTHING!

😎

reply

Yes but they’ve always been that way. Clearly you weren’t alive for anything during the segregation era or the LA Race Riots.

reply

Actually I was, and you are correct, sir. But the point is, now they're being triggered by
really stupid, small stuff.

drone technology

reply

That's true. I probably didn't see any drones back in 2009.

reply

It may not be that different but I'd say social media stuff. It just keeps getting worse. I'm hoping the record/vinyl old school thing will bleed into no more selfies, instagram and whatever. Let take it back to 1990.

reply

Instagram rocks, the rest of social media can die.

End of the mainstream use of media discs:
In 2009 even Apple laptops still have DVD Roms on them, nowhere to be seen across all brands today.

Enlargement of phone screens:
In 2009 flagship phones sport 3.5" screens, a size so tiny unheard of even for the cheapest phones today.

Ride-hailing:
Uber launched in 2010. That means in 2009 there were no Uber, only taxis!

Total dominance of supehero movies:
Iron Man was released in 2008. The rest is history.

But yeah, I think you're right there are no big fundamental difference between now and 10 years ago. Unlike the 70s and 80s or the 80s and 90s.

Tesla launched Model S in 2009 and until today we still don't have electric cars being remotely normal, nor self-driving tech. So much for flying cars.

reply

Yeah, no discs, and DVD sales down. Plus no more iPods and syncing.

Plus 10 years ago still lots of video stores

reply

I LOVE my Ipod!

reply

I use my iPod in bed. I don't want to sleep with a charging phone.
