Underrated/Hated Movie Directors You Really Love

1. Renny Harlin

I love Die Hard 2, Nightmare On Elm Street 4, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Cliffhanger, Prison, Mindhunters, 12 Rounds, Devil' Pass, even Driven

2. Russell Mulcahy

The Real McCoy (1993) and The Shadow (1994) are special films in my own book plus he made Highlander, Razorback, Silent Trigger, Resident Evil 3, Resurrection, Give 'em Hell Malone.

3. Steve Miner

House (1985) is my all-time favorite Comedy/Horror movie. Also, I love Warlock, Forever Young, Lake Placid, Halloween H20: 20 Years Later, Friday The 13th (parts 2 & 3), Soul Man

4. Paul W.S. Anderson

Mortal Kombat and Event Horizon are among my favourites.
Soldier, Death Race, Resident Evil (2002) were good too. The Three Musketeers was watchable. Call me mad but I love many moments in Alien vs Predator (2004) - his directing was good. I blame script writers

5. Dwight H. Little

I love his low budget films: Halloween 4, Marked for Death, Rapid Fire, Murder at 1600, The Phantom of the Opera (1989)

I gotta agree with Renny Harlin.

I really love Cliffhanger, Die Hard 2, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Deep Blue Sea and Cutthroat Island.

Yeah
Not a great movie but it is a shame that it wouldn't even be greenlighted today because there is some humor in the idea...it just wasn't carried out very well and C. Thomas Howell was always more of an ensemble type of guy...like in The Outsiders, in which he had a fine cast to play off of

No chance for a Soul Man Part 2 LOL
(not that we're beating down the doors!)
I think it's possible we've become a bit too 'sensitive' these days

They'd take a pass on Blazing Saddles and All in the Family too

I don't know how he's rated by the general public, but I really like Edward Burns's directorial style. It just gels with me.

Roger Donaldson never gets mentioned with the greats but from his early kiwi films like Sleeping Dogs and Smash Palace, through to his consistently solid international career with The Bounty, No Way Out, Cadillac Man, The Getaway, Species, The World’s Fastest Indian and The Bank Job; he rarely disappoints me. There was Cocktail of course, but nobody’s perfect.

I'm so happy you mentioned Roger. I adore No Way Out and even The Getaway.

The Recruit is another jem.

Seeking Justice (2011) and The November Man (2014) were underrated as well

James Foley made Confidence, Fear, At Close Range. I love him too plus he made some really amazing music videos for Madonna

I’m just realizing how some directors cross over to do music videos also. I read recently that Tobe Hooper directed a video for Billy Idol.

True! David Fincher (another favourite of mine) also started with music videos and he made fantastic ones for Madonna, Michael Jackson, Aerosmith, George Michael, Paula Abdul

I don't get the hate for Shawn Levy. He's perfectly capable of making an entertaining film.
