What is the deal with vinyls?
Arent they archaic? A lot of hipsters listen to vinyls and I am like why?

shareWhile I only do digital, vinyl has many fans https://www.analogplanet.com
I personally think they are a lot of trouble (records need to be well cared for) but many swear by them.
Well, they are hipsters. If they listen to normal songs using their normal phones while dressed in normal clothes sporting normal haircuts then they wouldn't be called hipsters.
shareThe emergence of digital media has made physical media less relevant, therefore vinyl becomes the most "useful" of the physical media due to its bigger art/nicer package.
shareI’ve been collecting for years and I’m no hipster.
I have a dual turntable set up with a mixer and the bulk of what I collect are 12” singles. These records were used in radio stations, clubs and promotional use. One title will usually have 3 or 4 versions on one record. Another advantage of the 12” single is its dynamic range. When the track is placed on the vinyl on what sometimes usually is reserved for five songs it allows for larger grooves giving enhanced sounds. I collect lots of EDM from 80’s - 90’s and in my opinion there’s nothing like mixing these tracks together. I have mix tapes that survived from the 90’s that I have converted to digital that all the needle sounds have become part of what make them so great.
These days you can find about any vinyl you want on Discogs and I do order a lot there but rare titles can be pricy. It’s so exciting when you order a batch of vinyl from the U.K. or somewhere and it takes forever to show up but the real fun is used vinyl shops. 12” singles can be bought really cheap most of the time but albums are becoming more expensive in part because of all the hipsters getting into it.
Vinyl movie soundtracks are awesome too. I recently found a sealed soundtrack of The Deep (1977) with a movie poster inside and the record was blue for 10 dollars in a used vinyl shop.
A big part of the experience is the album sleeve itself with all the art work and extras. I honestly love the way they smell. Everything about it is so much more appealing than a digital file.
I was just going through all my old cassettes at my pops house. I found some of my old mixed tapes too, I’d love to listen to what’s on them! I had pretty decent taste as a kid, found fugazi, firehose, nin, thrill kill cult, Jesus lizard, ween... all on cassette. I can’t bear to part with them.
sharejesus lizard's goat is one hell of an album.
you have good taste, i reckon.
i got rid of a lot of my vinyl this year. at one time that would have been unthinkable to me, but i just don't care much about that stuff anymore. i've tried to cut out all needless things out of my life. it's all just clutter to me now. i'm trying to work my way to the point where i have a laptop, phone, a week's worth of clothes and nothing else.
Thanks bud. Getting rid of your stuff is the way to go. I move around a lot and storage units are not cheap. Im good with getting rid of shit, but music has been such a big part of my life, I’m just not ready!! Sentimental stuff is the hardest to let go of for me.
shareSame!
I’ve been collecting since 1972 , although stopped buying vinyl in the 90s until two years ago.
I missed the ritual of perusing the record stores, chatting with my fellow shoppers, opening the gatefold, putting the platter on the turntable, sitting back with the artwork and liner notes, and soaking up the warm, fat analog sound from my awesome stereo.
I don’t get any of that with CDs, MP3s or god forbid, subscription music streaming services.
I heard hipsters moved past vinyl and are now obsessed with cassettes. Vinyl is cool though just not as practical digital.
shareI'm obsessed with 8-tracks.
jk
I'd buy an 8-Track player and a bunch of cassettes if I happened across one on Craigslist or at a flea market at a good price, not kidding
shareMy only experience with them is negative. My mom had one in her car when I was young and it never worked. I can't say I have ever heard one to see if they sound any better than the smaller cassettes.
shareMy babysitter had one she would bring over when she sat us kids
It worked really well
My dad had one in his big A-Team style van that played very clearly and was very loud
I like the nostalgia aspect of the 8-Track as well...old things interest me and if the old thing in question can play a tune so much the better
Yeah they were pretty bad. If you wanted to hear a song you'd have to wait until the tape got to it on one of the 4 channels. And many times songs were cut in half while the tape player changed channels.
shareI'm like "why?" as well. dont get it , but i have a few in a cupboard...
I'm sending half a dozen vinyl rock/metal albums from UK to AUS as a surprise birthday present .
I made a box, but havent found out how much the postage is yet !?
The postage will most likely make you re think your generous offer.
shareI have a decent size collection of my moms 45s. The Beatles, nitty gritty dirt band, Donovan... all kinds of good stuff in there. I still go through all the albums at thrift stores, never know what you might find.
shareI have a little collection of Vinyl.
It's cool to have a physical collection of some of my favorite albums.
