Did u have a different name on imdb?
I was djanimor.
shareSadly, I was too preoccupied being a jerkface on youtube to start a membership on IMDB
shareI lurked but never joined IMDb.
shareI was purple_lemon. They were good days until the trolls and the saboteurs destroyed the place. Christina Barrett's special brand of lunacy stays in my mind.
No offense to moviechat, but I really liked it because it was such an active site. It seemed like any movie, however obscure it may be, I could get plenty of feedback quickly.
Even with the trolls that became a pain the last couple years I still got a lot out of it. And there were people I knew on there for over 10 years.
I'm still angry about it being gone. I am grateful I found this site though.
There was nowhere else on the Internet like the IMDb. As you say it was very active and pretty much no matter what you were interested in there was a discussion you could join in to talk about it. It was also a very valuable archive of some useful and in depth discussions. I have an interest in period dramas and the boards for them were packed full of posts from people who really knew their stuff. It was criminal to erase the lot like they did.
Yes I loved that you could always find fans of any movie on your mind. It really was the perfect movie site. So comprehensive.
I still to this day don't understand why they got rid of the message board section. What was the point?
Politics
shareCan u elaborate?
shareThey didn't want to become a forum for the left-right divide in America, especially.
shareThat is funny. I never noticed any divide like that. But then again I was there to talk about movies. Not politics. Couldn't they just have gotten rid of the politics board? I would go there from time to time but it was all nauseating to read. I can't believe it got that bad.
shareIt was spilling over into all the forums and they didn't want to spend the money on moderating it. I wasn't shocked when they shut it down.
shareI remember there was one hard core troll who went by the user name of Naemak with a number on the end. He would post the most vile garbage along with little disgusting porno images for his avatar. The Moderators would delete his account but they were just playing whack-a-mole with this guy because he kept popping up, same name with the next number. He was into the five hundreds before they shut it all down. To me it seemed he might have been a paid saboteur so maybe there was some ulterior dark stuff going on to get the boards shut down.
Please keep in mind that it took years for IMDb to build its community. MC is still pretty young. Also, IMDb-ers split to multiple sites so it will take a while to build a replacement site. We're still in year two.
shareThat's the bad part. IMDB'ers split into to different sites. It did take years to build everything up, but, and correct me if I'm wrong, moviechat doesn't offer all the other movie info imdb does. It's like I go to two different sites now-this one to chat and imdb to learn some things.
shareAnyone remember Potato Head ("Steve")? He was a psycho. Also, Miss Yum Yum?
shareYes I remember them both. Miss Yum Yum was pretty belligerent from memory but I don't remember much about Steve.
Yeah, she was a nasty piece of work.
shareAlso, remember Gameboy? He was a sicko but funny.
shareName rings a bell but that's about it. I wasn't one of the Soapbox resident regulars. I ranged around on the Boards most of the time and only dropped in to the Soapbox to see if anything interested me in the moment. I used to spend a bit of time taking the piss out of Downton Abbey on it's board when the show was running. Had quite a few laughs and the regulars took it well.
Yep, but I was just on Ex Machina (2014) board. However, Moviechat may not have all threads archieved because I can't find mine there.
shareThey definitely didn't archive all. It's like there are just fragments, fossils really, of the old imdb here on moviechat.
shareFrom memory Amazon bought the IMDb website and they soon started to get in to some hefty deletion of the older posts. Then they decided to hell with it and just shut the boards down completely. That's probably why the archives here on Moviechat.org are incomplete. They could only grab what was left.
No.
