Facebook - To be on it or not to be on it - That is the question

I've never been on Facebook. Am I missing out on anything?

reply

No. You really, REALLY aren't missing out on anything. In fact, your life is better without it.

You see, there were several reasons I have never used it.

Reason 1: I was a kid when the World Wide Web came online and everyone started using it. Now my family didn't make use of it until a year or 2 later. The first thing they taught us was to protect our identities. You don't tell people your real name, your physical address, your phone number, your e-mail address, or put pictures of yourself online. I obeyed that to the letter, especially after hearing about stalkers.

So then Fakebook comes online in 2005, the same year I graduated high school (thank God). First red flag I got was hearing about people of the new generation doing exactly what they told us not to do when it came to protecting your privacy. You hear about people doing this very thing on Farcebook. Something told me there was something very wrong with this, and I was right to think so; because regardless of what they advertise about the safety of your account, they failed to mention how they sold millions of customers' info to third parties for profit. So if you think using the Privacy Button on your Fakebook page is gonna protect you, think again. All it's gonna do is protect you from other users, not the owners or anyone else.

Reason 2: In less than 5, or even 3 years, after Fartbook came online, jr. high and high school kids started killing themselves. Apparently Farcebook opened up a can of worms that the schools should have seen a million miles away, and yet they made it mandatory for students to have a Facebook account so they could access their schools' Fakebook page.

The can of worms I speak of, is bullying. Now it was pretty bad when I was a teen, but the bullying was only limited within the school and student body's sphere of influence. Facebook not only made it even easier for bullies to make their victims' lives hell, but also brought in bullies who didn't even live in that state much less go to that school, and some weren't even kids; some of the outsourced bullies were adults getting in on the action.

Reason 3: Facebook has made it very clear just what kind of monster it has become in the last 3 years. First off, it's become a tech giant that is part of the Big Tech monopolies going on. They're based in California, in Silicon Valley, meaning that they are almost entirely run by Democraps. And the moment they found out they couldn't truly influence elections in favor of the candidates they were backing, they freaked; and ever since have been cracking down on everyone who has opinions different from their own. They've been playing both sides to get away with infringing on people's First Amendment rights by first saying on one side of their mouth "We're a private company," but to the government, whenever they got involved, they'd claim out the other side of their mouth "We're a public utility!" I have zero interest in getting involved in a company that does shit like this, and nothing anyone tells me to the contrary can convince me there's anything good about Farcebook. I can't wait to see the look on Zucker-turd's face when one day, he either gets fired by his own circle of Suits, or sees his company get dissolved.

I’ve divorced myself from all things Google as much as I can using an Android phone. Replaced stock apps with 3rd party apps.

Signed onto Facebook to find long lost people I knew. I didn’t post, I just searched. But, my old company I worked for has a closed site...you have to prove you worked for the company. They keep asking for a photo so people can recognize me. Recognize me? Hell, it’s been 40 years since I’ve seen them. So, I posted a photo...the same one I use here in my profile! “Oh no, not the brain scan!”

The only reason I have it is to keep up with family.

reply

No.
I'm not on Facebook.
I'm not on Twitter.
I'm not on Instagram.

I've never been on Facebook either. Lots that's sinister about it.

I only got on it so I could talk to my girlfriend on it.

It's great for niche personal interest that you may not have in common with any actual friends. I like comics and video games, but few of my friends do, so I like have those groups to share with. The marketplace is nice too. Other than that, it's pointless.

There is no reason to be on Facebook. I quit over 10 years ago.

What I'm realizing about FB is that it's for people who are so starved for social interaction that they can't go two seconds without talking to anyone and would feel as if the world would end if they didn't. This is what makes the platform evil. It takes the most basic of human need (interaction) and exploits it so that people who are especially needy have to use it. I've been trying to get my sister off this thing for years, warning her about how it's full of fake news, and she refuses to get off it no matter what. She even wouldn't get off after tons of Russian spam bombarded her with friend requests. There's something really wrong with a platform if people can't get off it, even though they're being inconvenienced by it.
