Sometimes if the actors are too quiet or hard to understand, I will put the captions on so I don't miss any dialogue.

Always, when they are available. One of the things that bugs me about the otherwise excellent Criterion Collection is that their English-language releases do not have English subtitles.

And as long as we're griping, not that subtitles help with this when there's no dialogue, what's with the trend in shooting a movie with scenes so dark, you can't see anything that's happening?
shareI know...I've had to go as far as adjusting my TV picture just to watch certain eps of Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead...super annoying, this should never have to happen🤬

I don't consider a virtually, sometimes literally, black screen artsy, but whatever! 😁
I'm with you. Light it well, frame it well, and don't forget to not turn up the music so loud people can't hear the dialogue.
Game of Thrones saved a fortune on battle scenes that were so dark they didn't have to show anything!

I predict the next trend will be overexposure. Different visual effect, yet serves the same budgetary purpose, and we'll all end up with snow blindness.
My wife does (she's Indonesian), although her English is excellent.

always. i just find i lose a lot of dialogue to mumbling & loud scores, & even if i don't i just like having the dialogue there in case i do miss something.
