The absolute worst, cringiest and ugly word in the English language...

... has to be "supper". I hate everything about it. It sounds like it's a big pile of sludge that hicks in the 1800s would eat. I cringe everytime I hear it.

Luncheon

reply

I don't mind luncheon except it sounds a little pompous.

It always strikes up images of a cannibal eating a human leg all chicken drumstick like when I see or hear the word.

In England “supper” used to be mostly used for the before bedtime snack for kids. At least, that is how it was used in Enid Blyton stories I grew up reading. Kids would have light snacks like a glass of milk and some toast before they went off to sleep. Because they had their “tea” (main meal) after school and needed a little “supper” so they would not go to bed hungry.

In modern usage I agree, supper sounds like a low effort meal where someone drops a ladle of gruel in a bowl.

I would have never guessed England would use it. It seems too redneck for me.

Phlegm

It's an interesting dialect spoken in Belgium and a few other places. Phlegmish.

I’ve read Hansel and Gretel to my kids more times than I can remember and the phrase “to sup” being used. I’ve never heard it used anywhere else.
