Going to the theater this weekend? What ya gonna see?

I think I'm gonna see Killerman.

Where ya located, and what ya got a taste for?

.......Go!!!

reply

I'm going to see The Matrix a little later today.

reply

what, like a remake? or a replay of the 1999 one?

reply

It’s the 1999 movie, 20th anniversary screening.

reply

there is absolutely nothing playing here this weekend that i feel inclined to see.
apocalypse now is playing, but it's all the way across town & i'm not motivated enough to go all that way to see it.
but 'the souvenir' is finally opening here next wednesday, & i will definitely be going to see that.

i'm not!
any particular reason you'd think i was?
everything i said was true.
apocalypse now is playing at a theatre that's about a 90 minute walk away from me this weekend, & i just don't want to go all that way to see it.

but i am absolutely going to see the souvenir next wednesday.

reply

Souvenir looks good. I may have to see that too.

yeah it kinda looked like you guys were trolling me because the other guy said The Matrix (99) and you said Apocalypse Now (79). Around here we don't see replays of old movies, but I guess it's different where yall are.

No problem. This place is mostly an echo chamber anyways. Nowhere near the traffic of the old boards.

reply

ah, i see.
it's become quite common for theatres to run popular older movies for a few days, particularly during slower times.
some like it hot & sunset boulevard played here fairly recently.
i think one of theatres was showing jaws & e.t. last week.
& i believe there is a re-release of the matrix making it's way around right now to recognize its 20th anniversary.

Thanks

Francis Ford Coppola released a Final Cut version of Apocalypse Now for the 40th anniversary. It was playing at select IMAX’s two weeks ago.

how was it?

Killerman? It was okay. But I walked out halfway through because the shakicam gave me a bad headache. And, I couldn't really follow what was going on because the shakicam was difficult to ascertain details from, due to the close cropping. If one is gonna use shakicam, the frames can't be close-in cropped because that's a doubling of the effect. Close cropping is 'imtimate' and shakicam is 'intimate' but it has to be either or, NEVER both used in the same shot. It's obvious this is a newbie director who does not know what he is doing.

But eh, I'm cool with it. Wasted $8 but I can afford it once in a while.

The story seemed like it was heating up but, as I said, I left mid-way so I don't know how it turned out. Hemsworth was good, as always.

I don't blame you, I hate shakicam movies. I have still haven't watched Blair Witch Project.

reply

Thanks. I really tried to hang on but I couldn't. It's incredible how many still try to use it, which was basically a brief fad (and a failed one).

reply

I'm gonna go see it in the theater in December. I didn't have a problem with the shaky cam on a tv screen, but I have no idea what it's like on the big screen!

reply

For me it was a deal breaker. As I said elsewhere, shakicam alone is one thing, but shakicam used with 'close in cropping/framing' has a severe accenting effect, and it's very hard to follow what is going on. Not to mention the motion sickness that comes with it for many people. (most, I would propose). And the thing is, it's totally unnecessary. As far as I can tell it's ONLY used for two reasons: laziness, or to feed a director's ego (by being viewed as 'hip' and stylish). There is NO DEFINITE FUNCTION to shakicam whatsoever. It was a fad that went out years ago, but some guys didn't get the memo. Or they are just lazy. I think more often than not they are just lazy, and hide it behind 'this is my choice. I PREFER shakicam because.... blablablah'

I think the claim that it adds a documentary feel is BS.

If you watch a few movies by a truly skilled director like David Fincher or Denis Villeneuve then try to watch 'Hurt Locker' or 'Bourne Supremacy' or 'Cloverfield' ....the difference is stark.

As they say the proof is in the pudding. But still, some will defend shakicam to the death. They remind me of little Marie in the original Rocky when she yelled at Rocky, "I LIKE yellow teeth."

Being stubborn for stubbornness' sake. lmao

But I do agree with you that shakicam is somewhat more tolerable on a small screen. Probably due to the mathematical ratio of how far your eyes have to 'dart' back and forth within a nano- second time frame.

Cheers.

I actually despise the shaky cam style. It's more forgivable for a movie like The Blair Witch Project because it hadn't been overused by that point and because it was actually filmed by the actors themselves, which makes it much less contrived. It became a trend that got out of hand.

reply

Well said. Totally agree.

I will never forgive Paul Greengrass for ruingin the Bourne franchise.

About to leave for another viewing of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood to unlock my level 4 OCD achievement.

I would like to see It 2, but in all honesty I most likely will not make it to the theater this weekend.
