So at work today a first grader did not know what a b was. Bad?
So I have 2 first graders who don't know letters , sounds, colors or numbers. Thoughts?
shareSo I have 2 first graders who don't know letters , sounds, colors or numbers. Thoughts?
shareSlow learners?
shareI'm asking them to take a picture of a bird and put it into a box with a bed and a b on it. I'm used to it I just wanted you guys to realize the trouble we are in.
shareSounds like they have great parents.
shareWhen I was that young I would often mix up "b's" and "d's" because they looked similar but flipped. At least I knew they were betters though.
shareI would say they are behind.
sharehad they completed first grade this past school year or starting this year?
if they were going into grade 2, that might suggest some learning or behavioral problems, but it's not necessarily catastrophic.
i was put in 'slow learner' groups through most of my early elementary school grades. i found school difficult & absolutely miserable overall. it wasn't until i was 10 or so that i seemed to start to grok some things, & showed a bit of talent for math in particular.
So I work in Tucson. No comment. If you wonder whats helping the wall its me. I make no judgement I just say everyday , what can you do.. Sometimes I get a really great answer and sometimes I get ...B is for turtle.
shareP is for paycheck, B is for benefits...
Those are the only two letters that everyone needs to know and it seems like you are aware of them
To hell with the rest
so, are you saying that your students are Mexican and therefore do not know English?
shareThat is how it sounded lol
shareyes and no they are Hispanic..Many of the kids I help are English as a second language...
shareI have a kid today when I pointed at spoon, blue and chair he could not find these words... I'm thinking esl which means he speaks Spanish most of the time.. It could also be Special Education.
shareDo they know what you're talking about if you say the words in Spanish? Don't they screen children in your school district to determine their English comprehension level?
share'So I work in Tucson. No comment. If you wonder what's helping the wall it's me.'
*I fixed some of that for you:)
How is that wall coming along?
I'd hate to see a bunch of Mexicans come here and complain about their full time jobs
No not that crap.. I'm just saying I teach some wonderful Mexican kids , some of the smartest I know.. I'm just trying to help those who want to succeed. But its different here on the border. I love these kids.
shareSocial services here in NYC myself...just messing with you LOL
I retire with heavy bennies in 8.5 goddamn years...and may I never meet another uneducated welfare case again
Hay give me some pointers? So you give up?
shareI have a terrible habit of never giving up🤗
As to pointers stop giving a damn and simply follow the book...The 'rules' may seem prohibitive
but they are actually there to protect you
We cannot save them all
Put money in a TDA and invest in an early retirement account...
I'll be on a beach in Naples in 9 years...screw 'em
I've been doing this for 15 years and only about 6 kids have made me throw in the towel.
share'Quitting' gives you a bad rep...The pension, your SS pay and assorted retirement investments are far too important to lose over some doofy kid you don't know
shareIt is worth it when you look into the eyes of kid who has no future but you. Today I looked into the eyes of a bunch of kindergarteners..… some where stupid, and some I could see were ready to be the best. That's my job. Find the best of the best.
Honest talk, don't knock yourself out...the pension, bennies and SS checks are ALL that matter
The rest of the world will continue to happily devour each other and sop up the gravy long after we are gone
I'll see you on the beach in 10 years...screw this 'fixing families' BS😎
hey we could use some books and paper how about you help us out. I know you know what I mean.
shareGood luck lady
We bring our own soap to this crummy office
So, just to compare: my daughter will start year 1/first grade in September. Currently, she can read and write simple words and short sentences. She’s able to add, subtract and can count unaided to 100. She knows that a googleplex is a very big number (my fault). She knows the names of several countries and can point them out on a world map.
She started Montessori at 10 months and went to reception at her present school at age 4. I have no concerns and her teachers seem pleased.
On the flip side, we often read stories where children are still turning up for school in the UK aged anything between 5 and 8 and are still in nappies! Parents seem to think it’s the teacher’s job to potty train them! So, there’s that.
It was normal for my generation to learn the alphabet and numbers in first grade. Educators thought it would harm children if taught to read at an earlier age.
Children are fast learners. Take the extra time to help them. Be careful about judging them too harshly because children can pick up that negativity and it can discourage them.
are you a teacher
shareAlso it doesn’t start till September don’t put the kids on blast
shareSounds like you need to fire their Kindergarten teacher and catch them up on those subjects.
