Some may disagree, and I know it's not obvious, but to me it was clear that Caines character was in love with Walter's, maybe because she was a breath of fresh air in his extremely dull life. And also because he was too reserved to show his emotions.
Clearly Walter's character never realised anyway, and that's what makes it heartbreaking.
