Very sad news:/
RIP

i am genuinely sad to hear that.
i was actually thinking of him earlier this week - 'the hitcher' had popped into my head, the way movies will randomly work their way into your memory sometimes, & was thinking of trying to track down a copy. i haven't seen it since my high school days, but i remember him being really frightening & intimidating in it.

I'm guessing he was an even bigger star overseas? A glance at IMDb would tell me, but I haven't gone there yet. Guess I'm more interested in anecdotes more than foreign titles I might not understand.

I think most people here in Europe know him from his Hollywood movies. Here in Holland he's celebrated as the country's most succesful international movie star who also had a very succesful career in the Dutch movie industry before going to Hollywood. He was the star of Turkish Delight, a movie nominated for an Oscar.

Thanks ! I always liked Hauer and sometimes wondered why he wasn't even bigger in the US. He was very handsome but often was made into the evil genius type. I thought he stole most scenes he was in, he just had that style.

reply

He admitted he wasn't really that good at choosing the right scripts. He also just enjoyed playing bad guys. And he claimed that low budget movies were more willing to give him a higher salary. If you want to know more, I can always try looking up Dutch interviews.

reply

Thanks again. I think I'm just jealous cuz I thought he was an unusually handsome guy. Not like Rob Lowe but more exotic, more Nordic or something. Like Willem Dafoe isn't a hunk, but he sorta looks handsome, and Rutger looks WAY more handsome than Willem. He seems to command your attention.
But sometimes actors get into a groove where they play the easiest role that come to them. I think he could have played a handsome lead in an expensive period piece, but I haven't seen that.
And maybe he wasn't a great actor, but he sure had a Presence on the screen.

reply

Ladyhawke was sort of a period piece in which he played the handsome hero.

He sure looked intriguing with those blue eyes and blond hair and his tall stature.

Maybe you should check out the Dutch movie "The Heineken Kidnapping" from 2011. It's not a B movie and he's not the bad guy.

Well I knew him from the Guinness ads more then anything else in the 80's, I'm from Ireland. But looking at his European work you can see why many rated him as a next potential star, he had a bit of the Tom Hardy's to him. Just sheer charisma and he looked bad ass to boot, it's only when he got to Hollywood when he became a action star. I think to see him as a legit actor stick with his non Hollywood work, he showed he had more depth his work with Paul Verhoven in Holland, like Turkish Delight and Soldier of Orange. Also The Legend of The Holy Drinker from 1989.

He's probably more known for his Hollywood work in Europe too, many forget he was a bit of a star for most of the early 80's until the early 90's.

That's what I've been hearing about him. He cared very much about his privacy, but was still a friendly guy who embraced his cult status.

reply

how was his German at the end?

reply

It's pretty simple. Not as good as his English, I think.

reply

Wow. Thank you for the link. He seems like such a nice guy. I saw him glance to the side and grin with the same charisma he’s always had.
