I am really surprised I never heard of it or the band. To my ears it sounds like a pretty average alternative rock/pop song. I like the second half better. Good jam.
They're from Nevada to boot, where I currently live. (Though Reno not Vegas.)
That's exactly what it is. An average alt/pop song.
Perhaps the magic is in its simplicity. The lyrics are easy to understand and it's fun to sing along to. Cathartic, in that it's told from the position of the victim (of a bad romance), and who hasn't been there?
I bet now that it has come to your attention, you will hear it everywhere.
