Why do they use so many English actors to play Americans?

I don’t get it, are they cheaper? It’s all the time now, maybe even most of the time.

reply

Yes, I believe the term is 'White Mexican'.

reply

They also use American actors to put on a fake, posh English accent....

reply

That's a very good question. I'm actually surprised at how often it's being done now, considering we have a gigantic plethora of American actors that are happy to play the role of an American character these days. I'd understand using Canadians, show biz has used them for years, but Brits?

reply

I think they are less expensive and the quality is the same

reply

Yeah that’s the only reason I can think of, but like the above poster said as many millions of American actors out there as there are desperate for work it’s confusing.

reply

Budget and earnings are the bottom line in entertainment, the studios and producers want it all to look good on the cheap

I'd also add that way more English actors can do a generic American accent than vice versa

I always think of Keanu Reeves in Dracula LOL!
Hells bells, did he butcher the generic English accent...
'I know where the bah-stad sleeps!'

Hard to argue this point.

british actors are better trained on average, they have the best drama schools. fyi they are not less expensive, most american actors dont make much money, it is just the big names.

reply

^ This. Acting to the British is what cooking is to the French. Drama has a long, rich history in the UK dating before Shakespeare’s time. Drama is a serious subject at their schools too. Plus the Brits have that eccentricity thing too which helps their actors bring small, quirky traits to even the most basic, stock characters.

reply

Canadian actors do this also
