They released 'The Deconstruction' last year (it's in my car now).

reply

Is it awesome

reply

Early Pink Floyd is incredibly weird. The Velvet Underground and King Crimson also have a lot of weird tracks.

reply

LOVE early Floyd.

Childhood's End is my favorite song of theirs, and one of the best rock songs of all time IMO, as well as THE best-written rock lyrics hands-down, IMO.

Main Theme & Dramatic Theme = Hypnotism

Dogs, Pigs, Sheep = Amazing songs

Summer '68 = Gorgeous

Astronomy Dominae = Celestial

Marooned = Pure Floyd

Obscured by Clouds = Stunning ambient music

Pow R. Toc H. = Fun quirky track that has some amazing piano and instrumental work

Most of the Pink Floyd stuff I own is the early stuff. I agree Summer of '68 is a gorgeous song but I really like the quirky psychedelic stuff like Matilda Mother and Let There Be More Light.

I've actually been looking years to find another band that has the same type of psychedelic sound as Floyd, but can't find anything.

Yes, Light is a great one and part of my Floyd mix. I have heard Mathilfa Mother but I cant remember it... that and See Emily Play are two nebulous tracks for some reason. Maybe they were non album releases? No clue. I have heard them but can never remember them.

There are more I wanted to list, like Atom Heart Mother, Any Color You Like, The Great Gig in the Sky, Shine On... Diamond, More Blues... on and on.

I will probe my music memory for a similar atmosphere, but I will for now recommend two that are worth checking out:

Boards of Canada
Pretty Lights (jazz and blues influenced DJ, but fair warning, he has a LOT and a fair mix is more hip hop, but he has some wonderful nigh-psychedelia hidden in there)

reply

I've heard the Marillion song Childhood's End, but I didn't know Floyd had one. I'll have to check it out.

reply

The title comes from a novel, maybe before that... I cant recall if the Floyd version was on one of their foreign movie soundtracks. I know Obscured by Clouds is soundtrack material. It has been years since I last looked at which albums were made for movies, including of course The Wall.

yes!
back in the day when i used to take little trips into the deep end, tg's heathen earth was one of my favourite soundtracks.

reply

I don't know if I could call them cool, but Gwar is pretty weird.

Devo
Insane Clown Posse
Parliament Funkadelic

reply

Both Devo and Depeche Mode popped into my head, but I wasn't sure if they were weird enough.

reply

the sex pistols are weird cause they didn't even know how to play their instruments.

reply

[deleted]

The Doors were weird because they didn't have a bass player.

reply

Ray played the bass parts with his left hand.

reply

Yes and used bass pedals too, but still....

reply

There were indeed bass players on all 6 Doors studio albums.

reply

But not fully paid up members of the band.

reply

I think they were called ghost bass or something like that. 👍
