I really should watch Breaking Bad.

All this bitching about the game of thrones finale has got me thinking about shows of the past that were phenomenas of popular culture, and how they inevitably took a lot of criticism when they ended.

The one exception I can think of to a series finale if a show that was still hugely popular, going back to my childhood and MASH ending, was Breaking Bad. That one actually seemed to manage to satisfy the fans. It must have been truly epic. Got to get around to watching it.

reply

You must. One of the best TV shows ever. Also, if you like slowmoving shows that is a sort of prequel (but about a character that appears in Breaking Bad) is also a must. I love Better Call Saul, perhaps even more than Breaking Bad.

reply

I also wanted to watch Breaking Bad, but I just can't get interested about the premise.

reply

actionkamen - I was initially of the same mind, it was a turn-off to me that it was about people who make meth. I didn't think I'd be interested.

But when I gave the show a chance, I was hooked (on the show not the meth, lol).

It's so well-made and well acted, and, similar to things like The Sopranos, it's about the complex relationships and moral quandaries too, not just about the nefarious activities. It's very tense, complex, psychological, full of ethical struggles and inner conflicts. It's an amazing show and well worth getting into.

reply

Wow. Such a great explanation. Well done.

reply

I forgot to mention, there's also some brilliant moments of comedy too, to balance the drama and tension!

reply

Like you, I was not interested in the premise too. I didn't watch on it original run but binge-watched it few years later. It depends what kind of dramas you like but see what Prelude has said. His description is perfect for the show.

reply

I highly recommend Breaking Bad - amazing show! One of the all time bests.

For the person who said they can't get into the premise -- me neither, I initially thought I would have zero interest in a show about making meth! But then, I'm not a fan of violent mobsters but I love The Sopranos.

These shows are so superbly well-made that you will come to love them. Breaking Bad is excellent, don't miss!

reply

I'm the opposite in that I found the premise interesting -- moral dilemma of a regular guy school teacher who's terminally ill, faced with the temptation of making loads of money to ensure his family were taken care of. But it didn't turn out that's what it was about.

I watched the pilot because it was on right after something else I loved, and that was it for me. Never tempted to try it again.

It's possible some day I'll give it another try and then wonder why I waited so long. Who knows? Never say never :)

reply

Watch few more episodes. I wasn't that keen on 1st episode either but gave it a chance it just grabbed me and never let go until the end.

reply

I may do that someday, but honestly that first episode was so off-putting to me, I haven't had any desire to give it a second chance.

A lot of people who like BB also loved The Sopranos, which I did give a chance to. I think I made it through the first season. It interested me just enough to keep watching, but then something came up and I stopped watching. It wasn't compelling enough for me to pick it up again.

But I became a huge Mad Men fan. It still holds the record for the show I've watched more often than any other (10+ times, the whole thing) and for me sets the gold standards of shows.

reply

Wow. 10+ times for Man Men! I have never watched that show. Also, never watched Sopranos and I love gangster drama so much. Well everyone is different, so perhaps BB is not for you.

reply

Mad Men is an amazing show. It's a slow burn, with loads of character development and subtlety. Even after watching it so many times I *still* pick up on details I missed the previous times. You've got to pay very close attention :)

I'm surprised you haven't seen The Sopranos, since you love gangster drama.

Yes, we're all different. I'm not saying it's not possible I could at some time in the future give BB another shot and might end up loving it. It could happen!

reply

BB has character development to the full and it give various characters (even minor ones) some development. This was one to the things I loved about it. It wasn't just about the two main characters or similar to a procedural drama.

Coming back to Sopranos, never had time on initial run and even now I have limited time for TV. I watch only the things I like (e.g. BCS). For example, I watched the first season of Ozarks (Netflix) but the 2nd season didn't get grab me. So rather than keep going until end, I just stopped. Hopefully, I will put aside some time for the Sopranos.

reply

I do love character development, so now it's inched up a bit on my Maybe list :)

I do the same as you: if something doesn't grab me, or does initially and then not, I stop. A few I may come back to. Started Westworld, got engaged enough to finish the first season, started the second, and then it lost me. That one I may come back to.

I wonder if The Sopranos holds up to the test of time. Back when it aired it was very innovative and well thought of. People raved about Lost, too, while it was airing. I finally watched Lost a year or two ago and, eh, it was okay, but nothing to rave about. I suspect it was one of those shows you had to see as it was airing to get hooked on it.

reply

I never had any interest in The Sopranos, either. I'm happy for those who liked it and were so enthusiastic about it. I'm happy for anyone who has a show that is must-see for them, whether the rest of the world likes it or not.

I tried Mad Men and couldn't get into it. I wanted to, but it just didn't happen for me. But it is one I may try again someday since maybe I wasn't in the right mood at the time I tried it.

reply

I'm happy for those who love any show, even if it's not for me.

Could be you weren't in the right mood, but you could have also been put off by it at first for the same reasons I was. Or, it could be it's just not your kind of show :)

reply

I've heard and read many of these same points over and over, but I doubt I'll ever watch it. My interest in the premise is so low I'm not interested in spending the time to find out. Sounds bad, I guess. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

reply

But I felt exactly like you do now - my interest in the premise was minus zero, lol! It didn't sound like anything I would remotely enjoy at any level whatsoever, and I didn't want to invest the time either -- you get to a place where you know what you like and what's a waste of the precious time you have left. But then something can surprise you!

It came up on a regular free TV channel and I thought okay, lets just record the 1st and 2nd episode just to see what everyone is raving about. It's superb! Never mind the rather scuzzy premise, watch it for the incredible acting, script, psychological interactions and dynamic, Bryan Cranston's exquisite struggle with his moral compass -- it's amazing, it's great.

reply

I'll put it in my "someday, maybe" file.

reply

indeed you should watch it .
Most people know by ep 3 or 4 wether its for them...
but if you are still having doubts at ep 3 or 4 - watch the rest of Season 1
That way you avoid the hate from the fanatics and no one can say you didnt give it a proper try!

reply

I welcome hate from minds like those.

reply

You sound like me a few years ago.I went in with very low expectations because the premise sounded too depressing and dramatic.I didn't expect to like it but i was hooked right from the pilot.

reply

@jacob
you really should watch it!

reply

I feel guilty about missing this one.

reply

I bet you'd like it, there's humor, drama, some shocking violence and a good bit of scheming amongst the gangster types...a real home run

I felt the same way about BB and The Wire and after years of hearing 'OMG, one of the greatest ever! from everyone I gave both shows a shot

Breaking Bad and The Wire really were compelling, non-Stop drama and thrills, totally deserving of the hype👍

reply

I should start Always Sunny in Philadelphia from the beginning

reply

I was in the process of that, is their a new season coming?

reply

I think it's still on but I don't know, I wouldn't even try to catch up with the current airings

reply

im going to attempt to read infinite jest, but ill watch some tv and youtube along the way, maybe a few chess games
