Have you ever been buglarized or robbed?

A family member had a jaw dropping amount of money stolen from them in a burglary and I feel helpless since there's nothing I can do. The guy was caught, but the money hasn't been recovered. I don't care if its wrong to say this, but I hope he's harmed in prison for the pain and suffering he has brought us. Honestly, if I could get at him and get away with it, I wouldn't hesitate. This guy is a low life, piece of shit that does this for a living and at this point in his life, I don't think he can be rehabilitated. Fuck him and fuck his shitty life.

reply

Burglarized. Yes. Never robbed. Loaded gun to my face, yes, but it wasn't over money, just some punks who thought someone like me by himself would back down.

reply

Scary. Not sure how I would handle the situation. I'm not the type of let someone push me around, but I've also never had someone stick a gun in my face. Oh, and I meant burglarized. Someone broke into his office and stole money he's been saving.

reply

I have been robbed at work once with a gun and once by knife, I have had my house broken into three times (although I think that was an issue because of my ex husband), and I have had a car stolen.

reply

That’s a lot of things to have happen to one person!!

reply

That's over a period of 25 years. I think working at a gas station kind of lends itself to robberies. Like I said with my house, it was an issue with my ex. I think to this day it was his brother, or someone his brother knew. Car theft isn't abnormal either. I had a car that was easy to steal I guess. It was stolen from a mall and later found. I think it was younger people that took it for a joyride because of what they left in the car and the fact that they blew the engine. :( I miss that car.

reply

Yeah your right. 25 years is a long time!

reply

Thats a lot of break ins. I'm actually looking into cameras for my place. I've been doing some research and they are surprisingly affordable.

reply

It was, which is why I'm sure it wasn't just random. We ended up getting an alarm, and I made sure to tell his brother and magically we didn't have another break in.

reply

Aside from a couple car stereos when I was in high school and college I've been pretty lucky.

Sorry to hear about your family member....if you don't mind me asking, how did he get robbed? You say it was a jaw dropping amount of money so I'm just wondering if this was a physical break-in type of robbery where he had that much money in his house, or more like identity theft/bank wire fraud?

reply

Sorry, I should have clarified that. It was actually a burglary, not a robbery. Someone broke into his office and stole 5 figures - money he's been saving for many years. Where we live and the size of the building, I think it gave him a false sense of security. There's basically no crime around here. I told him more than once not to keep it there, but he didn't listen.

reply

Ugh that is really awful! That would be the equivalent of someone cleaning out my bank account and I don't know what I would do if that were to happen.

reply

Yup. He feels like an idiot, but is taking it somewhat well. Right now, the guy is in jail connected with other break ins around town, but hasn't been officially tied to this one. Police are still waiting for a DNA test to come back from a water bottle he left at the scene.

reply

my car was broken into back in the 1980s. they stole a Georgetown University jacket.

reply

I wonder where the jacket is today.

reply

long gone I am sure.

reply

As pointed out by someone, burglarized yes, physically robbed, no. Had an old girlfriend who got into meth and broke into the apartment where I had the locks changed. She didn't ransack the place, she was pretty sly about it. More an inconvenience than any thing else, but it bothers me. She took some things that had sentimental value. And as a humorous aside, she was in the background of a photo in the local paper and she was wearing the jacket she helped me pick out then subsequently stole.

reply

Sorry to hear that. Having your personal space violated is an awful feeling.
Meth is a nasty, destructive drug. Despite what your ex did, hopefully she got help.

reply

She may have finally moved to her sister's in a different part of the state. She couldn't hold down a normal life. Issues from childhood and a wild streak. Alcohol dependent. Always needed to find a new situation to burn up. If she sticks with her sis she's probably o-k. She's around 77-78 by now.

reply

Nothing serious really🙏🏻!

My bike was stolen from my Dad's garage when I was a little kid and he yelled at me for not locking up the garage when I put it away...and he was perfectly correct to yell at me

I nearly got mugged in The Bronx a few years ago but the thug knew me (I work with poor families in New York City) so the guy said to his buddy 'no, not him,' and they turned and left
They didn't run off because I'm some super baddass, but because I had done a good job providing help for his family previously...
Karma is real folks!

reply

Kudos for helping those in need. Luckily, I've never been a serious victim either. My debit card was comprised once, but the bank reimbursed me. And ya, karma is real. This guy has priors and is definitely going to do some time.

reply

Glad you have kept safe!
There are a lot of lousy crooks out there

I forgot to mention that my ATM card was compromised once...how they do that I don't know but the bank reimbursed me as well

If these thugs and creeps spent as much energy on studying and working they would be living a good life!

And yep, I hope they toss his ass in lockup for a good long time

reply

mugged once. Two guys. One had a gun, the other had a hunting knife.

They didnt get much from me, and I got to nail one. Picked him out of a lineup.

reply

People are idiots. My brother was jumped in high school for no other reason than the guy thought it would be fun. He got caught and had to pay for my bros dental work, which must have taken years. Last I heard, he was working in some greasy coffee shop.

reply

I was working in NYC at the time, and working late -- as usual.

I almost got away but my Metrocard didnt swipe right on the first try -- as usual. They had me pinned down and no one else was there at 3am -- except for a scant few across the platform.

reply

Holy crap!
Very scary
Did you follow up on the trial and if so how long were they sentenced too?

reply

Nah, that's not how they handle those. I just became the witness, and they plea bargain despite the supposed 5 yr minimum for the gun. He got 2 yrs and he supposedly gave up the other guy who was wearing a Scream mask at the time. They were hitting a bunch of people in downtown NYC, so plain clothes cops were hunting around for them. Picked this guy up in broad daylight on a stop and frisk. He had the mask the other guy wore, the knife and my ID on him. Stupid.

A couple of years for an armed robbery is a disgrace, and with 'good behavior time' the scum could be right back to it in a year or so

Sickening

reply

it's just about quickly clearing cases. muggings are a dime a dozen. when I went to report it, the cop laughed at me at first. when I mentioned a Scream mask, his demeanor changed b/c he had heard the same story a few times recently. you give up all your power without realizing it. you become a witness, but they handle the rest as fast as they can -- which means plea bargains.

reply

Yes! Two home invasions since 2012! Damn them to hell! High deductible on home insurance made us lose out on collecting from a claim.

reply

Were you home and do you live in a high crime area? I would definitely invest in either a security system or gun.

reply

Not the first time. We hadn’t completely moved into the new house. I told the detective I was surprised the 3 pieces of 💩 didn’t turn around and leave after the forceable entry. Surely it crossed their minds we were worse off than they were! All we had at the time were 2 recliners, 1 inflatable mattress, 3 tvs...1 was a portable. They ripped the tvs from the wall damaging the wall connectors. I wish they had just cut the cables. They cost us over $2,000. We had to repair and reinforce the entry door jamb, plus replace the tvs.

After the second event we ordered a security system. All windows and doors are armed. I carry a .22 Magnum and he has that Colt beside him at all times. No, we aren’t in a high crime area. Our house was easy picking as there were no neighbors around us at the time. It only takes 5 minutes to do what the scum did. Into, out, and gone.

reply

The lowlife that broke into my dads office is also responsible for up to a dozen burglaries. Oddly, he didn't take any computers, tvs, electronics, etc. He was mostly after money and boy did he find it. I would do ANYTHING for 5 minutes alone with him. At least he's sitting in jail right now, but that's still doesn't satisfy me.

My laptop was in clear view, but they didn’t abscond with it. The police did locate and arrest them. I reasoned since the ringleader was a felon leading two young ones, he surmised the laptop had the “Find My Laptop” enabled. Apparently when located he had a weapon. Since he was a felon, the detective informed us he was going away for a long time.

What cinched the case was due to a designer handbag the b___h wanted and stole from me. The detective brought a photo of the bag for me to identify. “That’s my bag!” I replied. I then proceeded to show him the other matching pieces to the set. He later brought me the handbag. I almost pitched it, but decided to launder and disinfect the thing to keep with the other pieces.

BTW, I erred in my previous reply. My husband just now refreshed my memory about the second attempt. He wasn’t home at the time. He noticed upon arriving home, even though they didn’t gain entry, there was some movement with the door hinges. He told the police if he had been home the scum would be dead! I will delete my error.
