How groundbreaking/original was Goodfellas when it came out?

Who were Scorsese’s influences for the movie and what directors/movies do you think it influenced?

To me it seems pretty obvious that both Tarantino and PT Anderson were inspired in Pulp Fiction and Boogie Nights, esp the latter w the freeze frames, flash bulbs (more from Casino) and quick zoom in on Liotta’s face after doing a line of coke. What do you think, did Scarface influence Goodfellas?

reply

I wouldnt call it groundbreaking or particularly original. The quick zoom to the face is ancient. Everyone you mention took so many elements from films that came before Goodfellas. And De Palma and Tarantino routinely copied note for note.

reply

You have the worst taste in movies. absolutely awful! My god you suck more than a leech!

reply

Are you kidding?

reply

No i am not. Tarantino and PTA are both desperate try hards who couldn't suck more if they specifically tried to.

reply

Boogie Nights is a masterpiece

reply

yeah, sure, just like Wonderland is.

I like Goodfellas but I would rate Boogie Nights a bit higher for charting unexplored to that point territory. A lot of us could have projected Henry Hill's life without much of his input. NYC mob is a known quantity to a fair number of people. Knowing somebody that was in the porn business decades ago is not quite as rare as a unicorn but close. I grew up about an hour from a midsized Northeastern city that had an active sex industry decades ago and some of the stories I heard would make for a good movie. A former high school classmate of my wife's was a medium-high end call girl for out of town businessmen back when such cities were still thriving in manufacturing. There was also a mostly underground porn industry around as well in the days before the internet. The guy that would have been my boss in my first job in that city specifically requested to be assigned to that city because of the nightlife found there that is not found in most other cities. It became very concerning to his father who was the head of the business and from a conservative Midwest city as they were looking for investors to grow the business. The son's lifestyle if it became known would have made securing money from dad's business acquaintances very difficult.

Goodfellas is pretty dreadful. The only reason I sat through the whole thing is so that I could cross it off in the "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die" list. (I only cross them off if I've watched the whole movie). It's just so dull and I couldn't care less about any of the characters.

reply

I'm curious what some of your favorite movies are if you find Goodfellas "dreadful".

Care to throw some of your movie choices out there that aren't "dreadful"?

Goodfellas is one of my all time favorites. It's phenomenal. Yeah, the characters are terrible people, so most people who watch the film don't root for anyone, but the ride is so wild and entertaining. "Dreadful" is the last word I'd use when describing Goodfellas.

Deliverance, Night of the Living Dead (the original), The Wizard of Oz and Scarface (83 version) are great movies. They're among my favourites.

I just saw Scarface with Pacino. Didn't like it although there was a certain entertainment value. Talk about unlikable characters. I think the Mom was the only good person. I wonder how these people all managed to leave Cuba? On a boat illegally? I did think it was pretty funny when his buddy told him how he should pick up women.

reply

Solid picks. Can't argue with those. Strange Scarface is one of your favorites but you don't like Goodfellas. Nobody's perfect I guess, lol.

reply

The sopranos probably wouldn't exist without goodfellas.

reply

The Sopranos sucks lol

reply

I wonder how old you are.

reply

What does it matter? How can you watch a Scorsese movie and then watch a watered down inferior version dragged out over a decade?

Worse acting, worse writing, worse production values.

reply

Not very.

reply

I never thought of Goodfellas as being groundbreaking. I like the movie but I don't know what innovations it brought.

reply

There is a really long shot that follows them through the restaurant that’s awesome. I’m sure it was done before but it really does stand out to me.

reply

That scene, the use of music was really incredible in showing the passing of time and what era (be-bop to the Rolling Stones), and some perfect framing and editing made it a phenomenal movie experience when I first saw it.

reply

It still is a very intense movie experience, I rewatched it last week

reply

I didn't like this movie mostly because of Liotta. Can't stand him.
