Cover songs you prefer to the original

If this has a thread already, sorry.

One song that I seem to prefer most of the covers that I've heard is Come Together. It's not that I don't like The Beatles, but I don't care for their version of their song. I really liked Joe Cocker's version in Across the Universe, but I also prefer his version of With a Little Help From My Friends.

I also like Chris Cornell's cover of Nothing Compares 2 U better than both Prince and Sinead.

Perhaps because it has a more 80's feel to it I like Pseudo Echo's version of Funky Town over Lipps Inc.

Again with the 80's I much prefer Soft Cell's Tainted Love to Gloria Jones.

I can't say that I prefer Boyce Avenue's Hanging by a Moment to Lifehouse's, but I think I like it just as much https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSCoHPOqe3U

I have to say that I Love the creativity behind Walk of the Earth's covers

Elvis’ Unchained Melody.

I'd never heard that before. Really good!

That was the last song he ever sang the night he died.

I just saw Pseudo Echo's version on an old episode of Top of the Pops. I hadn't heard of it before. Not sure what to think of it.

reply

I really can't remember which one I heard first, but the Psuedo Echo version was the one I listened to the most as a kid

Stevie Wonder's version of We Can Work it Out is great and overlooked. He gives it a funky treatment.

reply

I don't think I've ever heard this version. Will check it out.

i like siouxsie and the banshees cover of the passenger a bit more than iggy's original.

gram parson's cover of wild horses is the definitive version for me.

earth wind & fire's version of got to get you into my life rides the groove the beatles couldn't quite find.

al green's how can you mend a broken heart is great. i like the original too, but green as a vocalist at his peak can't be topped imo.

I really like the Sunday's version of Wild Horses, I don't think I know Gram Parson's. Will check it out.

just to clarify something - i actually forgot that parsons recorded it when he was with the flying burrito brothers, not when he was solo, so you'll find it under that band's name. & it's probably not really right to say that the parsons/burrito bros version is a cover, since it actually came out a bit before the stones' version.

i love the sundays' debut album - one of my very favourite records.

reply

Thank you for that. I will definitely listen to it when I can.

reply

Just listened. I like it better than the Stone's, but I think I still like the Sunday's better. But it was really good. Thanks

I prefer this rendition of Simple Man to that of Lynyrd Skynyrd: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgFQ6WmxdMs Just seems to have more depth and passion, imo.

reply

The second I saw Simple Man I knew it was the Shinedown version. I LOVE Brent Smith's voice.

Good, but I still prefer Jeff Buckley's. Although, one of the best versions I'd heard of this was in Canada 151 dinner theatre show. It was amazing.
