I'd say if someone takes a blowtorch to your skin that would be pretty poignantly painful, far exceeding any emotional pain you could possibly have at that moment.

shareI've had both intense physical and emotional pain, and can't say either is worse than the other. My first inclination was to say emotional pain is worse, but then thought back to the times I've had severe physical pain, and yeah, it's a draw.
