Want a job ?? Become a nurse.

I know a young woman who is graduating from nursing school in May and she has no less than seven job offers. None from hospitals, all from nursing homes which says something about our aging population.

reply

My wife is an RN
It's tough work but she really earns
Not a bad career choice

reply

They do make money.

reply

Nurses, like teachers, are treated like crap in the UK, and a lot of people are disillusioned to discover the job is not what they signed up for.

Still, the pay is reasonably decent and the work stable.

reply

I don't know much about England but you nailed it on the US side of things

Our Nurses and School Teachers are paid well and get nice vacation time but they get really beat up on duty

Nursing is a pretty solid gig, but pretty demanding

reply

Once again, this was a very polite, agreeable and civil post.

And yet you are now attacking me in a new thread calling me quite offensive names.

It makes me think that you are bi-polar, very confused, or very two-faced.

I have maintained my civility and friendliness to you, so I find it extremely odd how you are friendly to me one day and acting like a complete and utter a-hole to me right now. It's not normal behaviour I'm afraid.

reply

Oh Don't be so sensitive
We all tussle all the time here Malko...a good punchout with another user means people are paying attention and even interested

Toughen up Buttercup...don't be a crybaby, you are pretty fun
Here's some flowers for you๐ŸŒท๐ŸŒน๐Ÿฅ€๐ŸŒบ๐ŸŒผ

reply

Sarcasm doesn't translate well online.

I don't know if you're being sincere or what.

I found that out to my cost when I made a joke at OrsonWelles666's expense. He asked why everyone was committing suicide, to which I replied 'I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with you ;) '. I thought the ';)' would make it clear that I was joking (admittedly I thought he was asking a bizarre question, so I felt it made sense to punctuate it with a throwaway joke), but he seemed to take genuine offence, even after I made it 100% clear with the subsequent post that I was truly joking.

reply

Sorry, I often resort to sarcasm, I just love sarcasm

Are you a male or female..?
I tend to beat the crap out of dudes and I'm very polite to girls

reply

I'm a guy.

I'm tempted to leave things vague or even pretend I was female, but I don't believe in bullshit. I prefer to be honest with fellow posters and treat them in good faith.

Still, I like that you weren't sure. :)

reply

Did you just delete a thread?

reply

Yes. It was the one about 'two-faced people'. Since it was a dig at you, I didn't think it was fair to keep it going. You've since explained yourself so I felt obliged to delete it.

reply

I wish you hadn't lol
Our stupid feuding is kind of funny...I thought we were going for the 'I think you're ok/but I hate you' vibe

I'm gonna go bust your chops in some other threads...you really dropped the ball goshdarnit!

reply

I'm confused.

Serious question: are you bi-polar, or do you have another sort of personality condition that causes you to behave in contradictory, even one might say, schizoid, manner?

reply

I don't know if I'm bi-polar
Never cared to look into it buddy

I do see that you are persistent and I admire that

Continue on your path but expect that I will be a constant annoyance...nothing personal๐Ÿ˜‰

reply

Hey, look, can we just get along?

There are enough people here who give me shit who I have no intention of conceding my position with. At least you seem fairly reasonable and level-headed, for the most part, and I don't get the impression that you have any massive ideological beefs with me, so shouldn't we just get on?

reply

All good Malko...just harmless sparring

You frequently post baiting topics so I might give you a hard time from time to time (you can expect this lol)

No hate though
Carry on๐Ÿ‘

reply

Hey Shogie, I beg to differ on teachers.

Unfortunately, many are not paid very well at all, considering what's expected of them. My mom was a teacher for nearly 30 years and she worked longer hours than my dad ever did - often 12-hour days. Grading papers mornings and evenings, before and after school, giving extra after-school help to students who need it, etc. Part of her summer vacation was spent cleaning her room at the end of the school year, sorting books and supplies, etc. Sure, the custodians cleaned the floors and windows, but everything else was up to her.

Here, teachers report back to school at least two weeks before students do, with time spent prepping lessons to meet curriculum guidelines, getting their classrooms ready, ensuring study materials are ready, meeting with the principal, school nurse, counselors, and other staff, etc. Much of the rest of her summer was spent in training, either with the school district or the state to keep her license current. She was lucky if she had two weeks off altogether during the summer months.

Granted, nursing is demanding - I don't doubt it for a second - as they deal with life or death situations. But teaching is demanding, too. She finally gave it up because too much time was spent dealing with non-teaching issues such as uncooperative, cranky parents, disruptive students, ridiculous regulations and demands, and little appreciation for her efforts. I don't blame her one bit for throwing in the towel when she did. She wanted to teach, not spend so much time dealing with all the other crap.

I know this isn't true of all teachers, but I do wish folks would not dismiss teachers so lightly, thinking they work only six or seven hours a day, nine months a year. I imagine some may, but most do not. It's often a thankless job.

reply

I know a lot of teachers in NY (perhaps I should not have generalized about the US location, I stand corrected) that do well, enjoy lots of benefits but get put through the wringer while at their work

reply

Fair comment. ๐Ÿ™‚ I guess I get a little miffed when so many folks claim that teaching is an "easy job with good pay, short days, and summers off" kind of thing. The pay is often lousy until you've been at it for years. Plenty of teachers work second jobs just to make ends meet.

reply

I think the 'summers off' thing is so none of them strangle some brat lol

reply

Ha, ha. For teachers it's probably akin to solitary confinement after dealing with a roomful of rowdy kids all day.

reply

What do you mean about getting "beat up on duty." I don't doubt it may seem thankless in many ways, but if you are getting steady $$ and bennies, what more do you want? I suppose more support might be nice, but I'm not sure what "beat up" means.
I'm sure Nursing especially is demanding. That just comes with the territory. People are sick, everyone is scared. I think you seriously want to be of Healthy Service, and have your eyes wide open.

reply

The general public here in The States can be notably disrespectful towards both professions, dealing with families in crisis mode is no picnic and the demands of the work is often physically demanding

I don't understand your last sentence tbh

reply

Perhaps I should have said you should seriously want to be in the Health Services. Like you should know it's going to be difficult, but it's about preserving Healthy Lives or Comforting people when they are at a low point
Like I said, if the point is to have a stable income, that's covered. I don't know many jobs where you can expect people to give you positive feedback and vibes all the time.

reply

It's not about 'positive feedback and vibes' at all

People in crisis (whether they have a severe special needs child, a dying loved one...) often lash out venomously at the caregivers that want to help the most

It takes a toll on the nurses and teachers...those pros really care and get dinged up providing services pretty frequently

reply

I think in essence we agree. I'm just not putting it in a way that works for you. Life's rough for most of us, and doesn't end well.

reply

Agreed

In general we work fine together snepts:)

Or...life's rough for most of us until we kick it's ass and ride off into a beautiful sunset!

reply

Burnout in both professions is certainly an issue. I think both are "a calling" rather than just a job.

reply

Oh yeah, for sure

I could not wipe bottoms and other people's kids are usually very annoying

reply

they are held in high regard here in Ontario. A strong union.

reply

Good to hear.

reply

I should add that male nurses are sought after...so many patients are really heavy now and the big tough 'orderlies' we remember from the movies are very rare these days

Male nurses are still fairly rare but the extra 'horsepower' is sought after on the floors

reply

about 30% of her class are male.

reply

Smart guys, they should be hired quickly

reply

The whole class has multiple job offers.

reply

'Baby-Boomer' gen aging out maybe?

reply

That's another factor. The baby boomers are retiring.

reply

I wanted to be a garbage man...couldn't land the gig (in Yonkers you have to bribe a guy for certain Municipal gigs...GarbageMan was $5k in an envelope, not a lie, at a bar on Mclean Ave...a real party central if you know the NYC area

I dated a girl in Yonkers whose dad made it clear that if I married her he would get me a job in the Public Works Department...that's retirement in Florida easily ($$$)
She was nuts though so I bounced

Tried the Police Department but got dismissed for having two fights during the 3 month training course

Current job is lousy but it pays well...lots of bennies!

I should have gone into nursing though

reply

My wife has a nice Federal Government job with a better pension than I get in the private sector.

reply

The Gov't gigs do pay well and are mostly if not all union

I love unions

reply

I knew two people who applied to garbage collection positions. They were both rejected for having college degrees.

Nursing is a lucrative trade I've been interested in getting into, but I haven't seen a program yet that offers the prerequisites I'd need.

reply

nursing programs are available in most metro areas in the US...I don't recall where you're from

Tough gig but you get vacation time and a really good salary

reply

Lots of programs in my area. It's just that I would need to take the prerequisite courses to be considered for admittance, and with two degrees already I have to pick my next movie in academia very carefully.

reply

Congratulations. She graduated. Now get to work.

reply

No thanks.

๐Ÿ˜Ž

reply

I know a nurse who is finding it hard to get work down here despite being experienced. The field down here is really fussy and unrealistic in terms of experience and even whether it is recent or specific experience or not.

reply

Move to Canada ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š

reply

Howโ€™s ford working out for you ? Iโ€™m married to a nurse

reply

I voted for him. How is Jason doing ??

reply

Not well so far

reply

they are all the same.
