Will we ever see the day when no-one cares about race?

Or are there too many people, of all political persuasions and racial identities, who have a vested interest in maintaining that division?

reply

it certainly seems to me that, not only are we not moving that way, we're moving in the exact opposite direction, in that more and more people seem to insist that race, along with gender & sex preferences, are what matter most, and that we need to split the world into hierarchies to determine who deserves sympathy and who deserves contempt.

it all seems terribly backwards, & the exact opposite of what ought to done, but no one seems to be canvassing my opinion!

reply

Well, perhaps no-one is canvassing your opinion, but I can say that I personally agree with it.

Identity, and to be fair, this applies across the spectrum, and not just to the political left or 'progressives', is, unfortunately, becoming more important.

We no longer talk about bad behaviour or bad manners or abuse in general terms. We talk about it in the context of identity. So, abuse itself is no longer an issue per se; it's what colour or gender or religion the abuser/victim was.

But wouldn't it be far better to simply argue for zero policy on all forms of abuse and harassment, irrespective of gender, race, sexuality, religion and nationality? Is a rape any less bad because the victim is white and the perpetrator is black? Is a violent assault any less bad because the victim is a white man and the perpetrator is a black woman?

Will we ever see a day when no one cares about gravity? I mean, even after we all have anti-gravity boots, gravity still needs to exist. But probably we can stop caring about biology and genetics once we are all wearing designer genes in cyborg bodies. We will probably still need to recognize evolution though. I don't think elite dog breeds are going away anytime soon.

reply

Well, many scientists believe race to be no more than a social construct. We only talk about it because we've made it an issue.

By contrast, the force we describe as 'gravity' clearly exists.

It won't be my lifetime but I do hope so. My boyfriend, best friend and God children are all mixed race (I'm white), and some of the stuff said to them is unbelievable. It's usually white kids saying racist stuff the the children which they must have learned from their own parents ... it's just a very vicious circle ☹

reply

No. Because some people want to keep it going. Some want to keep saying they are "owed" something over things that happened years ago. Some people of one race will continue to blame people of another race for their problems. And too many perks would be lost of there ever was TRUE equality.
