What bothers you in movie endings?

One thing I hate in films more than anything is a lame and unsatisfying ending. When the story is going so smoothly, and then suddenly some unexpected or predictable lame ending happens. An unsatisfying ending can completely ruin a film's overall potential.

Can anyone else relate?

When one twist isn't enough and they need to throw in another...and another...and another...

Forced unhappy endings are stupid too.

And then s/he woke up. It had all been a dream!

Oscars, here I come!

Main character saves the day and gets the girl. Or does he? And... is she? Oh no, it's a trap! Or is it?

reply

When police sirens in the distance are too predictable and perfectly timed, arriving just to clean up the remaining mess.

reply

Oh yeah, that cliche is always annoying. lol

reply

I can relate. I try to avoid any kind of “predictable” movies. I hate watching a movie when 10min in you can pretty much predict exactly what is going to happen throughout the entire movie, including the ending.
I mostly stick to independent flicks for exactly that reason.

reply

As much as I hate predictable films as well...that's not what I'm referring to. I'm talking about a film that's going so well, and then is ruined by a lame ending.

reply

Well yeah dude, I mean that obviously sucks also... uh good movie, lame ending, no bueno.

reply

Sticking scenes in after or during the credits.

reply

Agreed. The only film I could give a pass on is Dawn of the Dead, when they finally arrive at the island.

reply

Forced happily ever afters.

Some good answers have been given, and yes, I can totally relate. One type of ending I absolutely can't stand is what I call the "aliens did it" twist. An example of this would be the movie "The Forgotten" with Julianne Moore. It had a great premise: a mother grieving for her son is, suddenly and inexplicably, told that her son never existed. Is she delusional? Is there a conspiracy? So many different routes could have been taken. But no, at the end of the movie, it's revealed that aliens are responsible for everything. It ruined the entire movie for me.
