What's the biggest problem with movies nowadays?

In your opinion...?

reply

Chasing demographics instead of telling good stories. Movies were always a business, but now it's a full blown product.

reply

I was going to say "industry concerns like profits and stockholders" but your first two words are a better way to say that.

What is with the washed out colour palette in horror movies these days??

reply

Washed out color palette??

What do you mean exactly?

reply

Horror movies these days seem to have all the colour washed out, making them seem all greyish in picture quality. A good example would be the remake of "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre."

reply

Oh yeah...now I know what you mean. I think directors do it to make their horror films look more dark and ominous. And it's widely overused. It can be quite annoying.

reply

Way too many remakes.

reply

Oh yeah...the remakes must stop.

Super cynical audiences who can't even appreciate great films. There's a lot of shit being made, but occasionally a great movie comes out that cinefreaks refuse to acknowledge as even being good. As a result there's like a hundred amazing movies that nobody watches or has heard of from the past 20 years. They're definitely harder to come by than the good 'ol days, but people still make great films, and the shit gets the attention.

reply

So true! I'm glad you pointed that out. There are still great films being made. But the problem is, they aren't promoted like the shallow and cheap-thrilled blockbusters. Take The Raid 2 for example. I personally thought that was one of the greatest action films to have been released in many long years. And somehow that film slipped through the cracks, while many other lousy action films were highly promoted. So I definitely know what you mean. Even if a good film is released, the people who you referred to as 'cinefreaks' won't appreciate anything new or original. It's such a tragedy really. I don't know what went wrong with cinema.

What I seek is innovation. I just know when I am watching something new and great, and it feels different. Innovation of technique and innovation of emotion is the most desirable for me. Movies that are difficult to comprehend because of complex emotion, or unexpected presentation is what gets me, and it still happens, just others won't always agree with what I like, and I don't need them to.

reply

can you name some? the best seem to be old and the new movies remind me of all little kids who grew up in my neighborhood even the lowbudget stuff, i dont want junk like frances ha

reply

The Place Beyond the Pines
Love & Mercy
Hush (2016)
Under the Skin
Michael Clayton
Nightcrawler
Mysterious Skin
The Dying Gaul
The Squid and the Whale
I really liked Lady Bird, tried to do Frances Ha, but I didn't like it either.

Those are the ones that comes to mind for recently(ish) released movies I liked.

Dialogue and delivery. I hate how people try to talk quirky in movies these days.

reply

Production costs. Ticket prices are a joke. Actors and CGI crew are reaping too much profit forcing stories to be rehashed and forced down the publics throat. Add to that the cost of promotion and you can see why only fools believe in that shit hole town/business.

reply

I would say something here, but everyone already said what I was gonna say.

I will say that the Writer's Strike back in 2008 was one of the reasons the number of good writers in showbiz went down a lot, so they've had to scramble ever since. It's only been a decade or so, but we can already feel the effects of it.

reply

The problem is having to start and stop up to over a dozen unworthy flicks to find one good NEW one worth watching.
