I really hate modern movie theaters.

I used to have the best movie theater. It was one of the ones they made after Lucas re-invented things. It was the best fusion of new school and old school. But now they went bananas. (As an aside, the best theater i've ever been to was Tinseltown in Co. Springs at the turn of the century.) A few years back they did over my theater and it's horrible now. They have these fancy deluxe reclining leather chairs and the way they're made, your feet don't touch the ground! You'd have to be Shaq tall. So you can only comfortably sit in the recline mode which just makes me want to go to sleep. They serve every damn food you can imagine so it stinks like a restaurant. And now they even serve beer, which I don't like one bit. I love the way it was. Shitty stadium seats. Popcorn and soda. Here's the movie. End of story. Now, the fucking picture and sound is AMAZING! Wow. They've really blown that out of the water. But you can't enjoy it! I HATE going to the movies now. It's so depressing.

We have the Alamo Drafthouse here, they serve beer and very good food
They show all of the recent movies but also run older ones (they do horror marathons and show lots of 80s films...)
The service is great, the seating is very large and comfy and they have a strict policy regarding cell phones and making noise during showings...they will toss a person out if they disturb the other viewers
I really like it (there are a couple dozen locations nationwide here in the States)

In contrast, I also like the rundown dumpy theater upstate where they do a horror marathon twice a year (12 hours of slashers and monsters, BYOB, trivia and prizes...)
The place hasn't changed since the 70s!
Small seats, worn casino carpeting and it stinks of 20 year old butter
It has a certain charm

I'm a top shelf pirate. I go to the movies to get out of my living room. I have a digital projector, I can get drunk and drool my eyes out any time I want. I cook like Gordon God Damn Ramsay. I don't go the movies for the home experience. I don't get it. I don't like it. I don't understand any of it and if I had kids i'd be ashamed to take them there.

reply

I find both places pretty fun
Different strokes!

I can't imagine the alcohol not becoming a problem... I don't go to theaters anymore because of the cell phones ringing, talking, but also the lights which is distracting..

Besides, the movies in the last 30 years aren't worth the money they charge, anyway.

reply

I've only ever seen one guy get tossed for being drunk (he was a 'yelling at the movie' type...good riddance!)
Mostly, the horror fans at the marathons are well behaved and have a blast!
It is a funny little community, many of us keep in touch via Email and text throughout the year
Beer has never caused any real issues, oddly enough

I have liked lots of recent movies but to each their own:)

reply

The alcohol at movie theaters is too expensive for people to get drunk lol.

reply

Yes, true...concerts and games too👎
A lot of the patrons at the horror shows 'pre-game' out in the lot and go out to their cars during intermissions for a quick round or two

Me and two friends knocked off 11 pitchers of beer at our last outing to The Alamo Drafthouse (it was an Italian horror triple feature)
Thank God we had a 4th man, designated to drive that night or we'd have been stuck sleeping in the car!

Except for rare occasions, I don't go to the more modernized movie theatre (i. e. the AMC, etc.), namely due to the quality of movies that are all too often played at these cineplexes. There are, however, three independent movie theatres in my general area, two of which I hold annual memberships to, and therefore get a discount for being a member, and get to attend free member events. The Coolidge Corner Theatre, in Brookline, MA, plays all kinds of movies, including classics, documentaries, and many other things. The Brattle Theatre, in Cambridge, MA, plays a great many older films. The Somerville Theatre, in Somerville, MA, in Davis Square, also plays occasional classics, as well. The above-mentioned three independent movie theatres are the ones I go to the most.

I like the new large comfy recliner seating. There’s enough room on the arm rests so people aren’t elbowing each other. Also knees aren’t knocking other folks. I saw Aquaman this week (reserved seating) and a very large guy arrived after I did. He sat down next to me, but during the movie he was no bother...not in my space. With the older theaters I would have been uncomfortable, just like with airline seating which is a bone of contention with me. Seating with the airlines is shrinking in size....theaters are enlarging...go figure.

BTW, we have a brand new Premier Cinema which opened this month. Not only does it have the comforts of home, the seating has swing out trays for your food & drink! Those I can do without. It’s going to get real nasty dirty with those things! And I can just see a parent setting their kids on them! I plan on visiting the new one to see “The Return of Mary Poppins”. I do the matinee showings...not as many rugrats to contend with.

reply

I hate the recliners too. Can’t get comfortable in them. Attracts weirdos who lounge in them with shoes off, shaking their bright white socked feet in my eyeline, all while knashing and knoshing stinky greezy cinema food.

reply

Oh come now, for every problem you mention there is a benefit to the new theaters. You don't have to sit right up against someone you do not know and fight over the arm-rest. There is no one kicking the back of your chair throughout the movie. When someone has to get up to go pee they do not have to slowly move in front of a bunch of people at stick their butt in your face or rub it on the back of your head. Maybe you forget how bad old theaters used to be.

But there are some annoying things I agree with on. I don't like having to choose my seat before I enter the theater. I just want to get in, find a seat, or two seats together and sit down. I don't know what the view is like from the seating diagrams they give us to choose seats by.

My favorite theater is an old theater in my town that only shows old classic movies from Hollywood, and it is the old style seats, many of which are broken, and all of which are too close together. I love the theater, but it is a trial to get through a movie.

reply

I actually sort of like the recliners, as well, because one doesn't have to worry about an inconsiderate person sprawling all over my territory, if one gets the drift. I like the stadium-type seating that's also present in many of the newer theaters, because one can look directly at the movie screen, rather than other people's heads.

reply

Oh gosh, it says there are 9 replies to your comment ... and I must have all of them on my ignore list! Tell me ... how many of them are smart-ass jerk responses, or stupid or pointless?

reply

You keep an extensive 'ignore list...'
That is your business, I wont ever understand it but whatever gets you through the day
What I do find disagreeable is blocking nearly everyone, acting proud of it and then asking what blocked people are posting...

Do you not see how absurd that is?

Anyway, I'm probably on your gigantic 'ignore list...'
Whatever, have a nice day Mr. Sunshine

reply

He seems to like responding to himself.

reply

I think he prefers it that way

reply

Me too ... it allows me to view a movie with minimal problems from other people who may be and often are inconsiderate jackals.

reply

Yep. I’m not there to eat and be interrupted, I’m there to watch this movie, shhhhhh! Rarely go these days.

reply

The theaters in my town don't seem to have changed that much compared to the 90s. The one thing I do dislike is the sound nowadays. It's way too loud. Maybe it's because of all the talking people do through movies these days.🤷‍♀️

reply

Wow. I couldn't believe how loud Bumblebee was. It was louder than a concert. It seriously was pain inducing. I don't mind occasional loud explosions, but when it's speaking voices making my skull vibrate for two hours it's a little much.

reply

Rarely go to the theaters, but when I do, I bring earplugs. Sound is so loud, I can still hear just fine with them in, without worrying about going deaf.

reply

It's hard to believe you can't find one without surround sound anymore.

reply

I like the new tiered seats because then, tall people sitting in front of me don't block my view of the screen. I had issues with that in the older theaters back in the 90s.

reply

The tiers are great. Nobody ever kicking the back of your chair either. It's not all terrible. I also like that you can track whether nor seats next to you were actually sold or if you have a free loading seat jumper next to you.

reply

My only real complaint about theaters these days are the ticket prices. It's like, just 15 years ago, in smaller towns, they were charging $5.50 for matinees, and $7.50 for evening viewings, whereas in big cities, some of the huge theaters were charging $9 A TICKET!!! Seriously, NINE DOLLARS! Who the HELL pays that much for a single ticket?! I ask you!

And now it seems ALL theaters are charging outrageous amounts for tickets! So instead of paying $22 for a family of 4 in the daytime, it now costs $36 for a family of four, and that doesn't include sales tax or refreshments. Ridiculous!
