... leave a spare key to their house hidden outside, under a rock or something, like we see in the movies? Why would they do such a silly thing? What about safety?

I keep my spare housekey hidden with my spare ricin pellets (for the umbrella, don'tchaknow?) garrote & Bulgy Mak.

Sure, why not, if you can hide it well enough. Personally, I have a Realtor's Lock Box that is hidden. But then I also have a digital key entry that I can change the combo on anytime I want to.
