... leave a spare key to their house hidden outside, under a rock or something, like we see in the movies? Why would they do such a silly thing? What about safety?

Yep...I make sure I'm in extra danger by leaving keys above the sun visor in my car
Hell, I barely ever lock up really

Actually there is a relatively safe way to leave key under the floor mat, I read it in a magazine many years ago: just leave say a hundred random keys there along with the real one. You always know which one, but uninvited people would have to try one by one.

We prefer leaving a key with people we trust.

Yes, they also left car keys on the back of the sun visor, just like in movies. I heard America is actually quite safe, unlike in movies.

Maybe 20 plus years ago. Can't remember the last time I used a house key. Use the garage door opener code to get in. I do leave the code # under a rock out front tho.
